Looking at a nice Ford 640. Until I saw this. Looks like it's welded in a complete circle. Starts and runs great. Anything to worry about?? Straight sheet metal, good tires, everything works. Opinions? Thanks

At some point, it slung a rod and punched a big hole. It might not ever give trouble but I would keep looking. That cuts it's value in half for me.

Here is mt Ford 860 that did the same thing. Welded it back on the block and she has been running since I rebuilt it in 2011.

Good luck!

As long as it's not leaking, it's probably not going to be a problem.

But, you never know. There could be other hidden damage, it's been frozen.

It will lower the value. You can point that out and use it to negotiate the price down.

But if you do buy it, you can count on the next buyer to use it against you!

Steve@Advance- I don't know about that 640 but mine was ran dry of oil, connecting rod bearing failed and lower rod cap came. Letting the piston/connecting rod assembly burst through the side of the crankcase. Mine wasn't frozen.

I agree... frozen. The frost plug is in the welded area - too high to be from a rod going through the block.
Would severely reduce the value for me, but if not leaking, I would maybe still consider it.

I agree with you......it was a freeze break. I zoomed in a saw the fracture passing around the freeze plug.

My mistake.

don't see anything to worry about as long as its running okay. course the tire kickers will chip in. those old blocks were pretty durable. welding them was a lot cheaper than buying a new engine back then. depending on the structure of the break and the welder they can be welded up just fine to run for many years.
