Dog got sprayed last week. Boy did that make the house stink. Saw the little rascal last night but no gun on me. Going to try to trap in live trap so I can shoot or drowned, but have a problem. How do I bait it into the trap without catching the cat? And the cat is NOT going into the house, not one night, not ever!

I put a bag of open dog food out an put a light beside the bag when the skunk comes the cats will
sit back and let them eat. I put it 20 feet from my front door. I just open the door and shoot
them . out of more then 20 skunks in the last 2 years I have only had one that stunk the place up.
I use a 12 gauge and it seems if they cant get the tail up they don't spray. I have hit them in the
side the back and the head just hit them square not to wing them .

This is true. BUT....if you shoot one at night, then figure to deal with it tomorrow, it'll still stink.

When any animal dies, after a while it starts 'leaking' body fluids. Same with a stunk...er...skunk. Ask me how I know. Go ahead....ask.

I don'ta know about that. Some years ago I caught the neighbor's cat three times one summer. Each
time I'd turn the water hose one him real good before turning him loose. He's leave like a scalded
ape but he evidently had memory problems.

I have hear that good skunk bait is a banana -- never tried it myself
though. Banana certainly wont get the cat unless it is monkeying around---
worth a try.

(quoted from post at 18:58:44 10/16/19) You might catch Possums and Raccoons first.

That thought crossed my mind but I gotta do something. Have bears around here too so I figure if trap is crushed come morning the bear wanted the marshmallows. Last night after dark I came out of the garage to head for the house and heard something squeaking to my right. Looked over and about 15ft away skunk took off scurrying. Luckily no spray. Anyhow, trap is set with marshmallows but it is raining so we will see.

I saw a skunk the other day. Must have
got hit by a car. It was laying on its
back, right in someone's front yard next
to their driveway. Like I said, it was on
its back, tail was straight out, and it's
legs were splayed apart. All of the
business end of it was aimed right at the
driveway, and it seemed to be bloated up
a bit from the sun. I'm guessing they
figured it'd be a good idea not to mess
with it, like messing with the wires in a
missle. I'd been scared to drive past it
on the driveway, it looked like it could
go off at any second with the slightest
disturbance in atmospheric pressure.

We trapped skunks and one of the things we got from them was their "essence" (scent). It is used to make 'scent lures' for trapping.

Anyway, we had one we 'dispatched', hung up by it's hind legs. Chris was using a syringe with needle to insert through the hide to penetrate the scent sac. As he pressed the needle into the sac, the 'scent' squirted out the sphincter and got him in the face! In his mouth, eyes, nose, all over his face. He started gagging and spitting. It took me 10 minutes to stop laughing.

We still like the smell of skunk. lol

White powered donuts, cats will not mess with them unless they are really hungry. I have caught 8 or 9 over the last few years. Don't believe what the say about shooting them in the head and they won't spray. So far I have not had one that didn't spray when shot no matter where or with what.

No luck as of this morning. If I don't get anywhere with marshmallows in the next few days I will try donuts.

A load of #6 shot out of the old 16 gauge seems to do a good job on them. It's 50/50 on the spraying though. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I've shot
them with a .22 in the head, same deal. About the only thing that will work 90% of the time is shooting them high middle, and break their back. If you do that,
they can't raise their tail to spray. If that doesn't get immediate results, follow up with one to the eye. It usually works pretty well, but when it comes to
skunks there are no guarantees. Ask me how I know...
