Tail gate was stolen off my pickup truck last night right in my yard.

Was there on Saturday, this pic was taken Saturday afternoon and my truck is the dirty one further away.

I'm sure it was taken Sunday night or last night. Guess someone needed it worse than me. Now I'll have reason to make a nice aluminum one. Lol

Well, that sucks ! I will likely be wrong, but, it seems to me when I had my last Ford PU, my father in law (who I got the unit from) had a factory gizmo on it that needed a tool to remove the tailgate. Bummer.

People sure are rotten, check the adds see if it comes up for sale. Good excuse to make an aluminum one is right, but with a lock!

Yes, you can get an aftermarket lock that goes around the hinge.

Even a hose clamp will deter them, maybe change their mind instead of risking the time it will take to get it off.

They are big business, body shops and salvage yards buy them.

With any luck you might can buy back your own, not have to paint it.

You're lucky they didn't take the whole truck.

A buddy of mine in Ontario, CA went home for lunch one day. Parked his pickup on his driveway, locked it, and went into the house to eat lunch. He came out 20 minutes later and found his pickup gone. They stole a locked pickup off of his driveway while he was in the house eating lunch. And he lives in a fairly respectable neighborhood in Ontario.

He did once drive me across the edge of another neighborhood where the cops won't even drive through the area during the day without at least two cars together.

Guess you need a big barking junkyard dog. Or better yet a sneaky dog that sneaks up on them and gets a mouthful of behind. Driveway alarms, motion activated lights, cameras that record a identifiable person may work also. They've been there once, probably be back. Be ready. gobble

GMC is now advertising that new tail gate that will do everything including wipe your tush. I wonder how much that tail gate would cost if it got stolen.

Jon, sounds like you need to invest in some video surveillance for your place.

Hard to believe someone coming into your yard to steal a TAILGATE, of all things!

Our truck has tailgate lock, as well as locking fiberglass top (like a hard toneau cover). Plus, we have 360-degree video on the truck at all times whether driving or sitting still. Video starts when we head out from the house and runs till we get back home.

At home, we have an [i:da1ad38947]insane[/i:da1ad38947] number of video cameras, recorders, and sensors. Have a "good neighbor" that has forced us to invest in such things. We ended up having to take him to court. Since then, haven't had so much as a nosy neighbor stop by to visit. *lol*

I feel for you Jon. I had a Massey Ferguson 165 tractor stolen from the family farm by Red Wing, MN. Looks like they took it Sunday morning, found out Sunday afternoon. Have had issues there for several years but this was the largest item stolen. Sheriff can't seem to do anything. Deeply troubling to see what is happening to that area. If anyone sees or hears of a 165 MF gas tractor around SE MN or WI let me know. Don't have the serial number in front of me but just an average looking 165 gas, fair tires, nothing special. Missing the grill screen and there is a yellow connecting link on the three point.

Ford? My '99 F250 needs new tailgate, kinda bashed up. I mentioned this to some contractors who were working at my house because they have similar truck and we were just talking. They told me the tailgates are commonly stolen off these trucks. I know mine is very easy to take off.

It will cost you North of $4000 to replace the tailgate on a Ford F-150 with a back up camera in it. Very good market for these in the cities in our area. Takes them almost no time to steal one.

The only thing that might help you is there are many years of trucks that the tailgate is compatible with. This might help you find a used one, possibly the same color.
-99-2016 Super duty tailgate will fit
-97-03 (2004 if heritage model) f150 fits

If the SD truck tailgate is used from a 2008 or newer truck with the spring assist tailgate, you will need the LH/drivers side hinge bracket that is mounted on the bed side too.

Laws changed but would been nice to opened door on house n fire some number 6 shout out of a tight choked 12 guage at their keesters.
Maybe this is why crime is creeping out more, criminals got rights

Nothing worse than a low down their. Now you?re always going to wonder if they may come back for more when you are away. Time to get a good sized dog. I am very sorry to hear about this.

Thanks for the video.

I'm still scratching my head around the news of all these tailgate thefts. Had never heard of this before.....and I'm [i:432e24a23d]from[/i:432e24a23d] Texas!

A comment about the hose clamp idea:
You could also tighten the clamp till it's pretty snug, then use a large flat screwdriver and hammer to spin the clamp so that the screw is inaccessible. It may be made of thinner metal, but sure seems to me it might be an equal option, if not a tad better. I've never known anyone who would regularly take their tailgate on/off, so I don't really see the need for the quicker 'keyed' access....but then I've always been a bit slow with some things. :?

As for the lock....another key to keep track of? Dang, I can barely remember where I keep the main truck keys. *lol*

I always wondered why my 07 Chev came with a lock in the latch on the tailgate, now I know. Someone stole my sons tail lights out of his chev truck when it was parked in a apartment complex.

A good perimeter fence around the whole farm with locked gates coming in the driveway and a couple dogs running loose at night does wonders to deter theft. Also firing off a
few random shots at night doesn't hurt either.Motion activated lights are a plus too.I also have a driveway alarm that is battery powered that transmits a signal to the home unit here in my house that says 3 times Alert Zone 1 or whichever unit the signal comes from think I can hook up 4 units coming to the one base unit.

Bummer Jon. I don't know what they cost where you are but I paid $300 for one for my '04 F250 a few years ago. The dadgum tongue of my goodseneck stole it plumb off the back of my truck and I was in it.
