Light switch help

This time of the year I seem to use lights as much as not. Cheap switches are the name of the game and all seem to be made in China. Cheaply.

My daily chore vehicle is still my 35 Chevy 1.5 ton. I seem to go through a switch in short order. I?ve tried them from everywhere. They all fail for different reasons - this one shorted internally and grounded out only when mounted in the dash (that was fun to trace).

All of the replacement switches for a truck this old (still 6 volt) are generic. I?ve ordered from about everywhere and used auto parts switches as well. I just threw in some toggle switch I had laying around for the time being.

Anyone have a place to order good quality light switches? Two headlights, a couple of gauge lights, and a tail light. Not a lot of draw. Ammeter shows the draw to be 12 amps or so (17 amp generator keeps up so it isn?t much).

If you truly want a high-quality switch and are willing to pay for it, GOOGLE "GM 1995040".

There's quite a few "NOS" genuine Delco Remy units out there, but NOT for the price of modern "clones" from "The Land of Almost Right".

You could put a relay in then the cheap switches would have a better chance of lasting.

A simple Bosch relay would do the trick, they are still available in 6 volt, lots of older VW's used them.

I agree , a relay will prevent a cheap switch from failing , the relay conveys the current rather than the switch , easy to install and cheap switches will last forever.

My 51 GMC 3/4 switch was not lighting the headlights. It has a bimetalic circuit breaker in the headlight "path" it was corroded and didn't have enough tension on it to close properly. Tweaking it made it work and also reliable. OEM is a real solution. (I have all new wiring in the truck, and fuses (9 of them) for all other stuff but the headlights. Jim
