Looking for any advice. I just acquired an International UD-9 power unit and was looking for any advice on anything I should do before I see if it will start. It's been
setting for about a year since it was run, the starter is out of it and I have moved it a few degrees with a screwdriver in the ring gear, so it isn't stuck. Any thoughts
Thanks

worst thing is rack will be stuck. remove throttle lever and operate by hand at pump. if lever moves freely its good to go. make sure the filters are bled and gas side is tuned and ready . see if she runs. probably want to give it an oil change.

Unsticking the rack is possible with a solvent and watching a video on the topic, no need to take it off the tractor in most cases. The early gas start/diesel run engines had similar pumps. Jim

When it fires up n runs, switch over to diesel, its not good to shut off on diesel. Reverse the way you start it to shut off.run it on gas till diesel smoke clears out.
Owners manual outlines why.do it 1 time you know why also.be careful with the spark plugs they are fun to find very pricy too

Some of the old IH diesels were known for the heads cracking. It is advised to not shut them down hot, Let them idol a while to cool down before shutting off. I know this has nothing to do with starting it, but thought it might come in handy someday.

Take the valve cover off and pre-oil the rocker shaft. It can take a few seconds for oil to get all the way up there and all the way down the shaft.

I have never seen any damage done to this type of pump from trying to start. If the rack is stuck you may have to pull it down to get everything loosened up. More times than not if this is the case they also will need the lift pump re sealed. most important thing is to loosen the oil plug on the pan and make sure you dont have any water on the bottom. It is always heavier than oil so it will settle to the bottom and most times not show up on the stick. Make sure the fuel filters are flowing and you have clean fuel, not water. Al

other way around, cool and shut down on diesel. diesel idling runs cooler than gas. I have quite a few gas starts and never have shut down on gas.

Yes it is , if you switch back over to the gas side and let it run on gas it start to heat up since gas bruns hotter then diesel. I have been around them engines alot longer then most on here and know more about these engines then most as i have run them both in farm tractors and industrial equipment since the sixty's . The company i worked for had NO problems with head or block cracking and we had a flock of them from the TD9 on up to the TD 24 and all the gallion graders had the I H gas start switch over engines in them . I ran a S"/M Diesel and a 450 D both turned up and the last i saw my old 450 about twenty years ago it was still running with the same head . Ya want one to stay running then this is how it is done . always allow ample time for warm up , never let the starting tank be out of gas , keep it full at all time , Never stall it with out getting it restarted fast since combustion chamber temps rise and cause head cracking , go ahead and work the bag off it but keep and eye on engine tempand never run her in the HOT range if you have to stop working to let it cool down then do so . When the days work is done then let it run at just qa little over and ideal to cool down and i mean at the bottom of the temp gauge and don't be in a hurry . we use to let the stuff ideal while we were doing tack cleaning fueling up and greasing at the end of the dayand this could take a half hour to 45 min. , then we would shut down on the diesel side . We had NO problems with the engines the only problem we had with the I H dozers were steering clutches and finial drivers .
