Looking to buy one of these both are in good shape and both roughly the same price. Both have the original engines. Which would be the wiser purchase of the two?

John Deere Pros:

Very durable garden tractor.
Better parts availability and support.
Lots of attachments available.
Kohler K301 engine which is readily rebuildable.

John Deere Cons:

Manual transmission.

Ford Pros:

Hydrostatic drive.

Ford cons:

Yard tractor, limited attachments available..
Gilson no longer in existence.
Briggs engine.

Others will add their opinions.

Thank you Steve for your input. I was leaning towards the deere myself but thought the ford had a kohler 16hp in it.

There are a couple of areas to check before buying one of the older Deeres.

First problem area is the variator - it gets worn and will not operate smoothly.
I have had good luck rebuilding them but it's a couple hours work and a machine shop bill
under $100. Second area is the rear hubs get worn and let the wheel wobble. Good used hubs
are available on eBay.

They are very similar to the "square fender" 110 and 112 built from 1968 to 1974.
The first tractors of that 200 series were built in 1975 and the last ones were built in 1985.
There were some changes in the tractors over the years.
Early tractors have manual PTO and later versions had electric PTO.
The brake band can lose its friction material - you can use construction adhesive to put it back on.
You should start it and drive it before purchasing.
The transmissions are noisy - they howl.
The Kohler engines can have a characteristic knock in the valve train.

Thank you very much, Steve. I was just getting ready to head out and check the Deere out. Your info gives me an excellent list of checking points and solutions. Seems i have found a great place for info. Thanks again fellas.

Thank you for your input. Seems to be the constant thought. I believe that i will take the advice given by you fellas and go green

IF it runs, drives, and mows for $250 you can afford to fix the
variator and replace the hubs. If it smokes really bad, maybe not.
Feel the block before starting the tractor. A cold start will tell you a lot.

I finished wearing out (2) JD212s and one (1)Jd214, always swapping parts if I could.
1.Two had to have rear axles replaced.
2.All tended to jump out of gear due to wear.
3.They did not turn very short, but that was usual in their day...no zero turns!
All were eventually high hours and gave satisfactory service.
4.All needed yearly variator service...loosening the belts and lubricating the center slide (sideways)variator sheave component..not fun, but doeable. Leo

Check out a JD 140. They are a 14 HP Kohler with a hydo transmission. Many attachments available and in our area you can buy a good one for $500 to $700. They are a much better unit than a 110 or 212 model.
