JD 60 starter replacement

Two weeks ago my 1956 JD 60 died in the field. It wouldn't even groan when I stepped on the starter lever. Put in new battery. Still nothing. So then I removed the starter to see if the cable connection was ok. It was but the bolt on lead terminal on the battery post was badly cracked. Bought a new one. Now I can't reinstall the starter. It just won't slide into the housing hole. Is there a trick to installing that starter?

Did you take the flywheel cover off? You will need that off to see what the problem is. I have done starters on 50s and 520s but not a 60. I think there is a yoke on a 60 very similar to a 50 and that yoke will be in your way as it drops down when the starter is pulled out. At least that's the way it is on a 50. (Been a long time and I don't remember exact detail)

Thanks Ron, The starter on my 60 has a short piece of metal bolted to it and the battery cable. It has about a 15 degree bend on it. I must have bolted it to the starter with the bend up instead of down. After fixing that I was able to install the starter.
