Removing power steer cylinder from GMC General

Lower end is a tie rod end type. It the other I am wondering about.. It has the drag link type adjustable screw in plug in the end. I was kind of hoping if I removed the big plug it might just pop off over the ball. But it didn't want to. That would have been easy. These don't come off like that?

I would think it would.

The nut holds one side of the ball socket against the ball. Did the socket move back when the nut was backed off? Possibly it's stuck in the barrel up against the ball.

It did move back and forth but not sideways. That ball may be forged in like a tie rod end and the adjustment just for taking up wear. Guess I will have to remove the whole thing but first I am going to take off the other end and see if I can get the end off and remove the rod and piston. Maybe. Just need to put a rod seal in as it drips fluid and drips dry after a time.

That piston barrel may have a round hole where the ball goes in,and kind of a slot the shank of the ball rides in once the ball has been pushed through the hole. You have to push or pull the piston barrel to slide it to the point of the widest part of the hole,to remove it.When they are worn and have taken a set,you will swear that ball was pressed in there. If you clean around it,you will be able to see it.I do know cleaning around that ball stud with the cup/boot seal is almost impossible.I did one years ago,but that one had the two piston setup, one piston on each side.

I removed the nut and then fished the part that touches the ball out with a small tap hand turned into the hole in the center of it. It came right out. There is a rubber cover on the back part that blocks seeing what kind of opening is there. I may have to remove that. As I look at the cylinder it looks like you remove the piston and shaft from the back. The part with the ball we are talking about looks like it comes out and you unscrew the tie rod end on the far end of the rod then it slips thru the bore with the shaft seal and rod wiper. The rod has wrench flats at the end do you can unscrew the ball end. That end looks like it is machined all from one piece, end and barrel together.

Did have a round hole and came right off once I got the rubber seal off and out of the way. Part of it was worked inside the hole keeping progress from happening. Thanks for the comments and advise. LB

Why not just put enough information in post to start with so everybody has an idea what they are talking about. And Google is stay away from, trouble only.
