my dads 1951 john deere
b has done most of the work in it life mostly with me on board. Since my dad passed away I have restored it motor ,paint and new tires. so while attending a antique tractor club plow days pulling 2/14 trailer plow
is slips out of 3rd gear which was the gear used most of it life while plowing and disking. With the rebuilt motor it has revised power but slips out of 3 rd gear when plowing, so my question is how do i repair the issue? any help will be appreciated!.

Odds are the gears involved in comprising 3 rd gear have extreme wear and need to be replaced. Also, the possibility of the bearings involved in the 2 gear shafts have extreme wear and need replacing. The tansmission's top cover needs to come off so these two possibilities can be investigated. Bearings most likely can be ordered new while gears and other hardware will have to come from a used parts source.

The problem you have is very common with model B. The detent plunger does not sit deep enough in the notch to hold it in gear. I re did a 40 B about 15 years ago and it has never slipped out of gear. It is used regularly to mow around shop. When I got it, it had to be held with wire to keep it in gear. In fact I got the high range notch real deep and it takes a hard whack to get it out of gear. I did a 44B a few years ago and what little it is used--shows--it stays in gear. I have some pix of the rework on the 44. When you hold plunger to the notch, you know what I have told you...Might try search of archives as I have posted about this before. I'm here, try email George

That transmission has nothing in common with the tractor with the hi-lo shifter of up to early 47. Common problem and factory fix was a piech that fit in tranny to lock it into the gear but that did not work. Of you could pull it hard enough it would do same thing in 1st orI believe 5th. After paying Deere shop to fix that problem and came back as bad as before we just kept a 1x2 (actually a .75 x 1.5" piece of board and just stuck it in the slot to hold the gear shift in place. And when it wants to pop out of gear no human has enough strength to keep it from doing it. Has nothing to do with gears being worn. And it will not hurt tractor, just when it happens you get a jolt from no more worward motion or if you happened to be in the way of the shifter. Plowed many an acre with that board in there. Under load one of the shafts flex enought to make it do that and a new shaft does not help.
