Rear Tractor Tires

When going to bigger tires there is a limit to just how much bigger one can go and still work well and look correct. In theory one needs a rim that is one inch narrower then the tire so if you have 16.9 tires the rim should be 15 inch wide so the 18.4 tires should be on a 17 inch wide rim

The recommended rim is 2" narrower....

Thanks for all the advice. I am going to try and measure rim width and go from there. I don't need radials and will look for used tires first. That is my reasoning! Thanks again!

Your 16.9X38 should be on 15 inch rims, 18.4X38 SHOULD be on 16 inch rims. I wouldn't be afraid of using 18.4 on the rims you have. I had some on a 14 inch wide rims awhile back, not right but it worked OK.

I needed tires to get a tractor mobile and went from 15.5x38s to 16.9x38s with no problems. Never measured how wide the wheels were, it worked fine.

Most of the 7600's in this area where equipped with 18.4-34's

Recommended rim width for a 18.4-38 is 16" but you can mount one on a 15" rim, 16.9-38's normally come on a 14" rim and that's a little narrow for a 18.4, it'll fit but it'll look like a donut.
Keep in mind that a 18.4-38 is also 3" taller than a 16.9-38.

16.9-38 is not a popular tire size and finding used is near impossible, I'm in the same boat needing a set of 16.9-38's for one tractor, new bias are around $675 each unmounted but this tractor will see a good bit of road miles traveling between farms so I'll probably spend the extra coin and go with radials.
