Case 220/lawn mower EZ clutch/engagement with mower issue

Hello Friends! I just recently purchased a Case 220 mower with a 14 HP engine (a previous owner swapped out the original 10 HP with a 14 HP engine) that is from around 1982.

I am having an issue with the left hand side engagement lever, whenever I press it forward to engage, it barely if at all, moves the blades. When I force pull the lever towards me on the mower, the blades engage and I can cut grass (the second I let go, it stops the blades).

When I push forward, I can lock the lever in place by a click, but it does not move the blade belt pulley on the deck much or at all.

The first picture is when I push the lever forward and the second is when I pull it towards me.

Any advise or help would be greatly appreciated !

I used to have a 220, and had to rebuild the mower clutch. It is a little tricky to figure out if the parts are put together correctly. It could be a matter of tightening together the parts where the fan is, but it could also be that the 2 pieces that have to spread the mechanism apart could be worn so that they don't spread enough.

You should put your question in the Garden Tractor forum. There is a couple of guys there that know these very well.

There is a Case Colt Ingersol forum that you should go to with lots of guys that are old hands on these mowers. They also have most if not all the service manuals posted there to. A quick google search will bring it up.

it just needs adjusted that one has the ez-adjust, loosen the front retaining bolt and turn the Big hex in a little at a time, tighten retaining bolt the recheck lever snap in DO NOT keep doing what you are or you will smoke the whole thing, call 608-624-1662 and they can fix you up with advice and parts if no answer leave a message they will call you back ran by two Great Case people who deal only in Case compacts these days the family sold Case for many decades

Just one other thing; Make sure the front end of engagement arm is pointing up and the
2 links to the clutch are in a somewhat horizontal position. The arm can also be
hooked to the engagement links when it is laying horizontal, screwing up the position
of the whole engagement linkage.------------Loren
