stalling 9N

Hi all.
Ford 9N issue. Runs fine, out of gear, with foot off clutch. Put in gear, starts running rich, black exhaust and dies out.
Ideas please.

First off check and make sure you have a good blue/white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more at all 4 plugs.
Next when was the last time you serviced the air cleaner and dumped the mud and water out and put in fresh oil?
Does it do the same thing with the air cleaner tube off? Also check and make sure the choke flap is open all the way.
Or you may have the main jet set to rich and you need to turn it in a bit

Could be failing needle/seat.

Float set too high.

Or a partially sunk float. Once it gets jossled around it starts flooding, can't stop the fuel flow at the proper level.

If it turns out to be the carb, and you go in, give the float the "shake test" for liquid fuel inside one of the pontoons.

Be sure the gas tank is clean, the strainer is in place. Any trash, flaking rust coming down the line will hold the needle valve open.
