3 53 detroit wont start

Yesterday I started after it had been sitting for years. I covered the air inlet to shut it down at a low idle. Today it wont fire. Just pours out white smoke. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Could you have tripped internal intake damper (if it has one) Is it turning over like a Toyota corolla or a Farmall M. Jim

I think the air flap is open. I just tried it again and is cranking like a toyota. Bellering out white smoke that smells like diesel. Wondering if I swamped it when I shut it down.

Maybe you wash the cylinders down maybe squirt a little oil in each cylinder so it can build some pressure and try to start it

I will look into that. It is considerably colder today. I also bled the whole system yesterday to get fresh fuel in it. It may have bled off. It does have a check valve before the first filter so I would think that wasnt the case. Maybe it's just wore out.

Ollie, Did you pull the valve cover? It?s simple if hoods not in
the way. Make sure your linkage works freely. The 3-53 that
everyone said would never run again is still going that we put
in the roller. Drove it all over our township.Best thing we did
lately with it is had the starter rebuilt. Now she turns over!
What machine is it in? Picture is a 6-71 but ours was kinda
sorta the same idea. The injector control should work with
ease. Same with the emergency shut off ours is spring loaded

Ollie , My brain kicked in again I remember an old time Detroit
mechanic told me about a smoke chart. I just googled smoke
chart for Detroit diesel.

If you take valve cover off,DONT TURN SCREWS ON
LINKAGES or change injector height .they are easy
to get out of kelter and have a run away.
A guy i worked with ran the overhead on a 6-71.he
got 1 injecter travel off just a hair.it started
quickly when he fired it up and went to cranking
up.the kill switch to pump wont shut it down when
set wrong.he pulled emergency kill cable.door was
gone.
I ran over put a shop manual on the air intake.
If its cranking over ok and wont start must be
for good reason.why did you smother it down in
first place?
Might be best to hunt up a retired big truck
mechanic and let him perform his detroit skill
magic on it

An old 3-53? Give it a fair sniff of starting fluid while cranking, if you haven't. Old Jimmies and Detroit two strokes are more tolerant of starting fluid than most, some say they like it..

Its a,power unit off a old roller. I bought it a few years ago not running. I dont know how long it sat prior to that. I pulled the valve cover and freed up a couple injectors. They were not stuck bad. Was able to tap and pry on them. I took all the lines off and flushed them with wd40 first. Then I flushed the whole fuel system. The flapper in the blower is open and it doesn't have an air cleaner. I covered the intake to shut it down because I thought the cable was stuck. I hope I answered everyone's questions and thank you for the input.

I didnt change anything when I freed up the injectors rack is still free. I may bleed the system again. I need to get the oil changed first. I have read only to use delo 100 40 wt. I dont know if I can get that here. I have always used delo 400 30 wt. in a old 4 53 I had. Any suggestions on oil. I know...can of worms.

Ollie , Do you have air inlet hose off? In case you have a
restriction in there. Neighbor had a tractor a couple weeks ago
running poorly. Ended up air cleaner was restricted and they
were looking at the fuel being the problem. Years ago I pulled
against this old 99. It is going on third generation in the seat
that I know of. I asked the owner if he had any extra parts he
said nope. Still winning.

have 3 of them beast if its below 50 give it a shot of starting fluid one of mine take quit a bit .even when its hot out i just give them all a shot saves on starters. mine are all 6v53 and all cold blooded as hel-

mine are in Massey Ferguson 66 wheel loaders at times the sit for weeks with out running thats why i give then a shot

I will give it a try. I use to run a freight shaker hauling silage. It had a 318. Had to give it a shot ether in the morning. I had a 4-53 that always started hot or cold. I have to run to town and get oil and ether.
I cant see any air restrictions looking into the blower and flap is open.
I want to put it in a pickup or tractor but may sell it as I have many unfinished projects and very little ambition.

The 53 series start just fine if the crummy S Series injectors and the low 17 to 1 compression pistons .
Replace with C series injectors and 21 to 1 compression N series piston/sleeve kits .
Many engines also crank slow due to tired starters. Under sized cables , high resistance connections and undersized batteries .

delo 100 40w is the oil to use. Straight
40w.

Before your next attempt pull the air
breather off and have a small piece of
plywood that will cover the intake
completely. Just in case it runs away. I
was always told covering the air inlet was
a last resort for a run engine.

Take the valve cover off and watch the rack
move. As you spin it over you can move the
throttle and watch the rack move.

Use some starting fluid. Just seems odd
that it ran yesterday but won't start
today.

The only thing I can come up with is it was 10-15 degrees warmer friday and the sun was out. Rack is moving. It has an external rod I can run it with. I do have the valve cover off. Draining the oil now and is taking a long time as it has a hose on it. It's also been raining so working between showers. Al i could get local was delo 400 30 wt. Going to have to look in town next time I go. I wont get ran much so I hope the 400 is ok.

I didnt try to start it today. I started to change the oil and had to order a filter. Will see if I can find delo 100 40 wt. tomorrow.

Anyone have pics of the oil filter assembly? I took it apart and ordered one but now that I'm looking at it something is not right. The whole bolt came out which is probably right but there is a nut and a small washer and rubber washer just floating on the shaft that will just slide inside the filter.

I figured out the oil filter. Last guy in there put the washers and disc that goes against the filter backwards.
