Contact points lube grease question ....

I don't imagine that the little vial of lube grease that come with a new set of distributor contact points is anything special is it? So, a
dab of white lithium grease or general lube grease would be good to use?

You want a tacky/sticky high temp grease so it will not throw off and get to the points and use just a dab. I bought a tube of Delco distributor grease years ago and it is hardly dented, it will out last my needs.

I'm sure that you're right, CH, though proper cam lubricant was once highly recommended.

Any lube is better than no lube and vintage tractor engines are not expected to run for 20K+ miles at highway speeds.

If I had no Lubricam I would use Vasoline, KY, anything available.

Bingo.

I bought a tube of Standard Ignition Lubricam sometime in the late 60s, and have been using it ever since.

I think a dielectric type grease so it does not conduct electric would be a good choice. That is what a small tube of dist. lube I have is.

I use plumbers grease. Any hardware store will sell it. It's high temp and has the added advantage of being waterproof. So if your tractor ever goes under water it won't ruin the grease.

The other guys have it right with cam lube. The red sticky high temp grease at the store in tubes for your grease gun will be just dandy. You need about the size of a small pea on the back side of the bakelite cam. Just a little dab.

Same here and it will outlast me by a couple hundred years. A distributor cam grease is special in that it is made not to fly off and contaminate the points. How important is it? I don't know but the probably $1 I spent 55 or so years ago makes it so I don't have to find out.
