Wheel bearing replacement.

Is there anyone who can replace a set of wheel bearing using less than 1/2 a roll of paper towels? Last week when hauling off bales the right front wheel of the Deere 3020 started squeaking some. Parked it in the shop and just today got time to get at it. Rear bearing was shot. Replaced both bearings, races and the seal. With disassembly, cleaning and repacking I must have used almost a whole roll of towels and still have grease all over me. Should have nice soft skin for a while.LOL Tom

I packed front wheels on my dodge ram 150,used quarter roll i must have it down to a science.but i cleaned pliers, cresent wrench hammer n punch n 9/16" wrench n screwdriver a lot before i was done

I don't use any. take apart, remove brgs, wash brgs. and hubs in varsol, blow dry. clean with brakleen, then pack them. whats with all this grease your talking about? wipe hands with rag. I just hate used grease on stuff.

Get some boxes of those disposable nitrile or latex gloves from Harbor Freight and wear them when working with grease. That is what I do.

Yup, about half a roll sounds about right. I learned the grease in the left hand and the bearing in the right method in Auto Shop in the sixties. Work the grease up through the bearing from one side to the other. Makes a real mess, but it is the best method if you don't have a bearing packer tool. I figure I could have bought several bearing packing tools for the cost of all the rags and paper towels I have used in my life.... Oh and then when you think you are done you drop one of the freshly packed bearings on the ground and have to start over.

I'm with retired farmer. I never used any gloves until maybe 20 years ago. Now I rarely use them, but I have them on the shelf and anytime I am doing anything involving paint, grease, or drain oil I am putting gloves on.

Nice thing about semi tractors and trailers having oil bath hubs, much cleaner to change. Bearings are usually good but oil seals will start to leak so just change bearings and races while in there. But yeah grease packed bearings are a mess, we grease pack the removable flip axles and I went through several of them one week, it was a messy week.

HUMmmmm , guess i am to old school as one maybe two RAG's get me thru wheel bearings and a quick wash in mineral sprits and i have a clean rag to reuse . Been usen the same 100 rags for i don't know how long .
