Starter drive replacement

I have installed a new starter drive on the armature. Now I have to get the circlip back together. What is the trick here? As you can see in my picture I have put a puller on the keeper to hold it against the ring then I tapped the ring with a brass punch to try and get the keeper over the ring but no go. What are your suggestions? The starter is off of a 1070 Case.

hard to see in that picture , but is the keeper the right way on? any starter I just used pliars and it popped in then there was another washer to go over the clip side.

Is the groove deep enough to accept the ring? Was it inside the collar before? if yes to both, use a medium screw driver and tap the ring at the opening then work it around into the groove. Jim

rustred, that's what I'm seeing, the collar is backward, the other side is open to accept the ring. Squeeze it in with pliers.

The old clip and ring were punched out past the grove by the old drive. So the drive was chewed to bits against the ring gear. The ring and clip are replacement parts from a starter shop. So. I guess my plan will be to chuck the armature into my lathe and cut the groove out a couple thou and make it fit...

Your locking it the way your pulling on it. The collar does not have a chaffer on the front side. It is actually under cut just a little bit so the lock ring stays in once assembled. So you have to have the ring compressed and THEN slide the collar over it. No need to force it with a puller or anything. The only thing I do is check for a burr on the edge of the snap ring grove. Run your finger across it and IF you feel a burr just take a file and lightly level it out.

Put the collar on the shaft. Then put the ring in the grove. Then take a regular old pair of pliers , hold them perpendicular to the armature. Clamp the ring in the curved part of the pliers jaws. Set the ring to where the pliers are holding it completely shut and in the bottom of the grove. Just hold enough pressure on the ring to close/seat it. Your going to slide the pliers off the ring with the collar when you lock it in place. So while lightly holding the pliers closed with one hand I take a smaller hooked pry bar and by setting the back against the starter drive you can easily POP the collar over the lock ring. If your fighting it you do not have the lock ring in the bottom of the grove on the armature.

You can put the lock ring and collar on way faster than I just typed this. LOL

P.S. Make sure you have the collar on the armature correctly. Meaning the opened side towards the lock ring. Don't asked me how I know to look at this. LOL It does look like it is backwards in the photo but it may be right too.

Nope not backward. The ring is already started into the taper of the keeper. The other side is pretty obvious that it would not fit backward. This next pic is a bit better. Just to tight.

Put a washer over the shaft that is the right size.
Now take 2 pliers and squeeze the washer and the collar from each side and it should pop ring into place.

You are missing the washer that goes on the end.washer has a small lip that goes toward the clip.assemble the way you have it with lip washer put on last the use two pair of pliers and squeeze the two washers together.will snap together easily.

Take that puller off. Put the armature in a vise. Use pressure with a water pump pliers to turn the gear against the collar. Find a pipe or wrist pin that fits over the end of the shaft & give it a tap. Have all 3 pieces together when doing it. Simple!
