Bridgeport J head milling machine value?

Bridgeport J head milling machine value? I priced one at work for $1600 they say something is wrong
with the table. Comes with a Newall digital readout. No vice and no tooling. Variable speed drive 2
horsepower three phase motor. Thank you

One was on our area Craigs list a while back for $2,000 it worked, no tooling..I wanted it but a guy was ahead of me...

Depends on what's wrong with the table.

If it's just the lead screw/nut stripped or worn out, that's an easy fix.

If the ways are worn beyond the travel of the gibbs, that can be fixed. Not cheap, but if you are not trying to hold close tolerance some shim stock will make it better than it is.

If the table is broken, broken beyond use, deal killer.

They might just be talking about the power feed. Probably a Servo, easy fix.

Look at the table in general. If it's worn and gouged, drilled and abused, good chance it was used in production. But if it is still in good condition, the ways still have the marks visible, it was probably in a tool room, saw an easy life.

The Newel readout is a big plus.

Be ready to spend some money on tooling and a vise though.

I just bought a Precision Matthews benchtop mill. PM727-V. So far very happy with it. 1.5 HP, 6 speeds, brushless DC variable speed motor. Runs on 110 wall outlet. Uses R8 collets just like the Bridgeport. They could not give me an old Bridgeport unless it got a thourough checkout by someone who knows what they are looking at.

A lot of that old machinery sells for scrap prices. It all depends if you want to work on your mill or your projects.

Someone there most likely knows what is wrong with it. Ask and if it is just slop it is well worth 1600.00!
I just replaced the feed screw brass nuts and the handle spring on an old Bridgeport round arm a while back.

Put Bridgeport mill parts in Ebay and you can find a bunch of repair parts.

Depends where you are. They are cheap in the northeast, but fairly speedy where I am at in ND. You won?t find much of a Bridgeport here for less than $3000.

I purchased much the same Bridgeport with variable speed 2hp. There are several places to get parts and I can pass on the info if you end up buying it. Mine had the brass gear in the quill damaged from a student trying to engage while running. It did not take much to fix it. I paid like $1,500 for my mill. It was from a community college. Can you get the serial number off the machine? It is located on the front of the knee not on the head. The serial number on the head is just for the head not the machine year of manufacture. If it has a bad power feed on the table that would be an easy fix. My Bridgeport does not have factory power on the table but I have put it on with the after market drives, both on the table and the knee. Putting powering on the knee is really nice to not have to crank on that thing any more.

This one fell off the turnip truck when it passed buy about 15 years ago. It cost me $50 to have a 3 phase converter made for it. Came with a vise and a couple hundred different bits along with dozens of clamps, chuck adapters and a couple of drill chucks. I don't make tools with it, but it is one heck of a nice drill press.
