Folks, I'm not an International guy and am not associated with this tractor in any way but it is a very nice looking 240 in SW Ohio.

Don't see many of these.

"I" don't think it's a bad price, but many on here probably think it's too high.

For me, I like to compare what that much money could buy me in a brand new machine, what kind of work I could expect do to with the new machine, and how long the new machine would be expected to last. Then compare that with the condition of the tractor. In this case, looks like a good buy. If there was no 3-pt, I'd say it's about $1,000 too high.

"Serious inquiries only" is code for "If you try to talk me down on price, you're not serious".

This is why I always determine my price and state "Firm" in ads.

I do not negotiate.

I have one just like it the paint isn't bad but not that good, very good sheet metal, grill guard, fast hitch with 3 pt adapter ,New tires on the rear I've been trying to
get $1000 hasn't sold yet.

Where abouts are you? I'm betting to far for me because I wouldn't mind having something like that. A little tractor to mow with and your price doesn't sound outlandish like in my area.

Aww, Dean, that takes all the fun out of it. I grew up watching my dad negotiate, and became pretty good at it. I welcome the opportunity to see other folks' techniques. If I come upon some guy who folds his arms and refuses to even listen to offers, I'm usually off to the car, even if I might have been talked into his price.

We had one exactly like that growing up. No hydraulic hookups, no IPTO, a 2 point and power steering - not that great of a tractor. Looking it up the power steering was an option. We used ours to run grain augers, mow hay and pickup bales pulling a wagon. They have about 28 HP. A step up from an 8N but not a big step. Top speed to pull the wagon home was 12 MPH. When it was time to work the race was for the H, the loser got stuck with the 240. Its about half the tractor a 340 is.

If you are buying it to use its $2000 tractor or so.

I always thought they were around 28 HP. 40 really seems to be stretching it to me. About two prices for my part of the country or at least a thousand too high.

That's why I put "Firm" in the ad.

I don't want to negotiate and I don't want negotiators to show up and waste my time.

Tractor Data says Engine horsepower Gross 40; Drawbar claimed 28.91; Drawbar tested 28.07; Belt tested 30.82 and claimed 32.24 so he is right on the horse power from where he is looking at things and you are right in actual usuable power. Big difference between bare engine and power to wheels. I do think they are a nice looking tractor tho. And tractor data says 2 plow size.

Same here. What gets me is when I put a "firm" price, but some yahoo still has to come along and offer me pennies on the dollar, EXPECTING me to go down. In my eyes, that's an insult. At least I have learned from this site that I should not take it as such, because some people actually believe that if it's listed for "X"-dollars, then the seller will take less. That, too, is not always the case.

KCM ..... so if you go to look at something where the ad says "price is firm", under no circumstances would you make an offer? Same question
would go out to Dean as well if he reads this.

I take "firm" as gospel and do not insult the seller.

If I think the price is too high, I do not call let alone go look.

I know guys that can Jew 20 cents off a a 25 cent
pack of wriggleys gum ! Not me if I?m interested in
something enough to call on it the price listed Is
inline with what I want to pay if it isn?t I move on

I'd ask if he/she is dead set on the firm price and then proceed according to their reply to that. If they stick to the firm price I'll either buy or walk depending on how I feel about the item.

If they show any willingness to negotiate I'll make a respectable offer.

Tractor Data says a 40hp engine and about 30hp belt. Also says original price was $2,700. That was equal to a basic economy car cost at the time. I wouldn?t want to pay more than the original price for a used item but inflation sure messes up the comparison. But, what is interesting is the concept of a medium size farm in 1962 being able to afford a chore tractor equal to the price of a car.
