gotmyfarm M starter

(quoted from post at 16:42:40 08/30/19) What did you find out to be the problem with your M not starting? Stan
I posted the results that night as to what happened. You must've missed the update. Turned out the starter is not so good. I had to take it off the tractor and beat it up :D , really I did, and put it back in and it fired right up! I'm getting a new starter!

Don't get a new starter just replace the drive . The new starter will not hold up as well as the one you have now. If the durability of that fancy new style drive on dads H is any indication of it. I would just replace it with the old style with the spring. If it has been converted to 12 volt I would use a smaller wire from the switch to the starter to lessen the impact to the drive as it hits the ring gear.

What fancy new drive is on your dad's tractor, that Bendix one? Is it not working? The armature on mine looks pretty bad, too, which is also replaceable with a new original style. What size wire would you use? I think on there now is a big 0 or 1 at the smallest. There is conflicting advise out here as to what kind of starter to put on in a situation like this. I should have ordered one already but still am not sure what to get.

Jim's Advice use the original starter (fresh rebuild) with the new clutch drive, not the old flat wound spring type. Jim

Jim, I have been trying to figure out which one you are talking about. I found the one called Bendix and it still needs the flat spring, so that must not be it. Can to give a link to which one you recommend? I'm not understanding which one you mean.

Right here on YT parts Go to the parts link at the top, go to Farmall and International, select M, scroll down to electrical parts, scroll down
to starter drives (pictures), (Part No: 565549-New) Starter Drive New Style is the title. $19.41 Jim
