Hi all,

Thought I would throw this out to the community and see what comes back. I"m thinking of starting a small side business but haven"t come up with a name yet. The business would:

- purchase older tractors/ garden tractors (<25hp) to repair

- sell lawnmowing equipments/ small tractors that have been refurbished/restored/tested

- help members of the community by cutting lawns for veterans, disabled, elderly who can"t do it themselves at no charge

This will be partly a passion for saving older garden tractors from the scrap heap and also a way to help members of the community who really need it. Let me know what clever names you can come up with.

Thank you!

been there with the shop part, you are headed for liability nightmare good luck. I have lot of new parts inventory will sell ya

Re-wheel Mowers, Re-Mow, Good-to-Mow, Grass From the Past, Mow Down, Made to Mow Again, Green Discharge, Mowing to the Edge, Lawn Do, Re-Appreciated Mowers.
I have not run out yet, but I stop for now. Jim

I wish you all the luck in the world!!

Have seen quite a number of such shops, some that operated for years. Sadly, too many folks are drawn to the higher hp engines, cup holders, arm rests, and other such things that lawn mowers obviously must have. I imagine in another year or two they'll add an on-board TV for watching your favorite sports or gardening show while mowing! *sigh*

There are a couple of places like that around here still. One is Re-Run Equipment, and another is Recycle Restoration. There is also a motorcycle restoration shop with that name, but the word Re-Cycle is hyphenated. There was also Refugees From the Dump, but he died many years ago.I still use old Wheel Horses, two 73's and a 71.I keep them up pretty good.

I'm no good at names. But I wish you all the luck in the world. I have done my fair share of buying and fixing and selling over the years. Lawn mowers have been the worst for me to try and make any money on ! Now if you get into compact tractors and implements I have had WAY better luck with those !
If you already have a source of income from a "regular" job where your taxes and all are being taken out of and health insurance. I'm going to say do your mower work under the radar as a hobby, cash or trade only.

I wish you luck. You will find that trying to just break even monetarily working on mowers is tough. People will go and buy a "new" box store mower for $1500 with a low monthly payment before they will buy a good used higher quality mower. A simple gas push mower can be bought for just over $110 new. Also if you charge anything at all for your labor the average repair bill will be more than the mower is worth in 75% of the cases.

I used to do a fair amount of lawn mower repair. Now it is just a trickle. They are all higher quality mowers too.

As for fixing and selling. You would have to have really cheap mowers to resale them. I mean under $500 type.

I will also tell you to see your insurance agent before you start this business. You will need a good liability insurance policy to protect everything you have earned in your life time.

You will need to make sure every single safety feature/switch is working when it leaves your shop. Even if the customer has unhooked it and is yelling at you for rehooking it. If you do not do this you will be liable if anyone is hurt operating or around the mower. This also includes deflector chutes too.

As for a name: Simple is usually good. Your name and lawnmower repair. example: Pete's Repair.

I used to buy used tractors, repair them, sell them. Lost money. Now it is customers that I repair and my own. Mowers are customers and they pay shop rate.

Good luck.

Yep, I'm with the others here. While if you do try it I wish you the best of luck. But I fear that the margins are just not there. As others said, there are a lot of folks out there that will buy that new 110 buck Walmart special, run it 4-5 seasons and buy another when it collapses. Or they will get a Murray rider for 1500 and put it on a credit card. So that means a push mower has to be less than 1/2 cheap new. I don't care if it was a 400 buck mower new. If I can buy a mower for 110 new I'm not paying more than 1/2 that used. Same thing with the older riders. Most folks are not going to pay top dollar for a used one. About the only things in a mower I see bring decent money used are commercial duty riders and that still isn't a great market.

Local guy here who ran a used stuff store wanted me to overhaul lawnmower engines for him. New rings and gaskets at least. And including labor wanted me to do it for 12 dollar a mower including labor. Said he had to get that kinda price to make a profit on the used mowers.

Cutsomore Lawn Service and Repair. It seems to me that you would like to serve your needy or deserving neighbors while putting wear and tear on older machines that you would like to see kept off the scrap pile. Maybe you and your fellow mower enthusiasts could form a club that could fix upand restore special older lawn care machinery to put in a museum attached to your workshop where you and your pals could maintain and repair older and modern mowers for the public at full price to create cash flow. Throw in mowing grass for dozens of deserving yard owner with your own modern mowing equipment and you and your club members will be way too busy to go after the one who thought this scheme might work. Actually any one or two of these projects would work ok if profit is not required.

If you are holding a full-time job and doing this as a hobby, I would just use my own name. If you do it full-time I would form an S type corporation to insure limited liability. If I was buying parts, I would pay the sales tax as I bought them and charge no mark-up but charge enough on labor to cover the trouble buying the parts. If you buy wholesale and sell retail, you must have a sales tax number. I assume you are in USA. I just speak about sale tax in my state. Corporations are federal and sales tax is by state

Check with building code in your own location. This may change property taxes or violate municipal code, For example. ]My neighbor did some auto repairs in his driveway and did excellent repair work. He built a concreter pas about 500 square feet and the county assessor (#$@#^&) listed his lot as commercial and raised property taxes. I had a welding shop and sold the tools, equipment and materials to new owner .He paid me a good rate of rent. The new owner made good money and built a new building after renting for six years. leaving my building and lot vacant. I allowed the county to store lubricants and grader blades in the building and park graders on the lot all free. The assessor continued to list this building and lot as commercial property. Thanks for reading my rant.

local welding shop guys did mower repair and sales to stay steady between commercial welding jobs and walk-ins. One guy left for a greenskeeper job at local fancy golf resort. The other guy sold the building and business and sells the mowers and snowblowers on CL, most push mowers are $90, single stage blowers $120, more for upgrades. He likes messing with snowmobiles and dirt bikes, too. Not sure where he gets his supply of mowers and blowers, but there are always some around that need a clean carb and new plug, oil change and sharp blade.

You'll hear from a lot of people with bad backs who need their lawn mowed, trees and bushes trimmed, snow moved and house painted. And can you pick up the paint for me, as I have a bad back.

RSMR Ltd. ....... short for "Real Sorry Mower Repair Ltd." ..... That should draw in some sympathetic customers.

A guy I know jokingly called his mowing business "Mow Money", from what others have said maybe "No Mow Money".

Having done small engine repair at home for the last 10 years, I don't think that would work.

I don't buy very many mowers at all to repair. The people selling them with problems want almost what I can sell a repaired one for. I mean, its hard to get $500 for a used mower when the customer can have a new one with a warranty for 1,000. The profit is just not there to make it feasible if you really want to repair the problems so your buyer has a dependable machine.

What has been done around here is to advertise the free removal of non-running lawnmowers. I tried that when I was last out of work and while I was given quite a lot of absolute junk-which I had to deal with- I was given a repairable 318 John Deere.

The other side of your suggested business would be more feasible. Get a couple of good mowers-(one for backup-there are sure to be breakdowns and you don't want downtime: You might also consider springing for a new 'primary' mower) and get into the lawn mowing business. If nothing breaks you can do pretty well and if it rains, you have plenty to do from about May until October or November. (At least here in NC) Then take the Winter off, unless you want to get into snow removal, if that is an option in your area.

Whatever you do, don't go with an name that's even remotely offensive. Clever, yes, offensive, no. I've seen too many places with off color to filthy names and I know myself and lot of other folks are put off right from the start and won't consider going there.
