John Deere 60 starter

Still trying to figure out why my 1953 60
won't start I took the starter out and
bench test and it spins over with the
battery charger as soon as I put it in the
tractor nothing at all I checked for a
ground issue but found nothing I shorten
the rod to the starter still nothing I put
a new push button switch on it everything
looks good there could the starter be bad
even though it turns over with the battery
charger thanks for any help

Could be bad connections or dirty or broken wires. What you need to do is do a load test and see how many Amps your starter is pulling when you try to start the Tractor as if the bearings are going bad in the starter it will need more amps to work than you have available and that's assuming you have enough battery under the seat, you'll need two BIG 6 volts like John Deere made it with OR one F.E. 12 volt, something so big you have to go to a real battery shop or fleet jobber and you'll need a truck to haul home

I have a new 12 volt 750 cca took out of my JD 70 starts it just fine cleaned all the battery cables something fishy with the starter I'm guessing

The copper contact button sticking out of the starter housing is worn away too far. I built one up with solder once but it didnt last long.

i'm betting on bad cable from battery to stater had a massey 44 that would not turn over every thing was shinny clean found under gas tank cable was all green but looked good on the out side by pass every thing with a jumper cable from battery to stater on JDS dont ground to the battery box they are bolted down and dont make ground good

If the bushings are worn and the armature drags the field coil they can spin free ok but when a load hits, nothing.

Put your test light or volt meter from the starter cable stud (directly to the stud, not the cable end or nut) and the starter case (directly to bare metal on the case, not the engine block).

Try the starter. If you get battery voltage from the stud to the case, and the starter is not cranking, there is a problem in the starter.

If low or no voltage, there is a bad connection or bad battery. Keep checking back toward the starter switch, the grounds, battery connections. Find where you are loosing the connection UNDER LOAD.

Just be careful, it could start cranking during the test!

I tried that with a light tester and it stayed lit when I engaged the starter so it's somewhere in the starter I guess thanks for all the help everyone

Ok I took jumper cables and hooked to the starter and the battery hit the starter and it spun over so I should just replace all the battery cables right? The starter is probably ok I hope

Where is the ground cable from the battery connected? If it's just bolted to the battery box that may be your problem. On my 50 I ran it down to the rockshaft and bolted it there. End of problem for me.
