Brain surgery on my JD distributor

Been working on the old John Deere 60 all summer a little at a time, was ready to install wires, plugs, points and new cap this evening and when I removed cap I found that the entire plate underneath was a crusty rusty mess, couldn?t get any screws loose, all stripped and rusted tight. Wish I had of taken a picture before I finally had the idea to cut it out with a dremel tool. So now I?m in need of the plate, any ideas on finding one would be appreciated, found one on eBay that I believe will work.

No telling how long it?s been since this tractor last ran, hope this is my last surprise with it....

That is a mess!

Have you checked the side play in the bushing?

I assume it has a bushing, if a bearing it will need some attention.

Does the centrifugal advance move? It should turn a few degrees and spring back.

If it were mine, now would be the time to take it out, disassemble, look everything over.

I can't imagine that your advance works. There was originally a felt piece in that hole below the rotor which helped hold some oil in there. I'm surprised your springs still exist! There's a plug in the side of the housing where you can fill the cavity around the main bushing with a very light oil also.

I remember some time ago advising someone on here about spraying around some light lube while in there. An expert directly contradicted me to say how terrible it was to have oily points. I've seen oily points still working. And I'd a whole lot sooner have to replace points than deal with corrosion. And here where I live, moisture is the enemy to ignition, not oil.
