Help on a JD hand throttle

The hand throttle on my John Deere 2120 had to be rebuilt with new discs to hold it in place, i started putting it back together and hit a snag. There is a spring and washer that has to go back on, also a stop piece that only lets it go so far either way. Does anyone know a trick to getting the spring, washer, and stop piece back on? I'm not able to hold it up and get the roll pin back in, almost a 2 person job. I tried C clamps but they just got in the way.

Sounds identical to what JD used on a 2240. To compress the spring I used a valve spring compressor for a flathead engine but this only got me part of the way there. I eventually made a small jack out of a block of aluminum and a capscrew and was able to jack up the throttle stop bracket enough to compress the spring and insert the dowel pin. I also failed with the c-clamp approach.
