I have what I think is a massey 30. its a 12 volt 4 cylinder gas. coil is missing. it is 12 volt so will a coil for a 50 or 65 work okay. thanks for reading.

You need to look for a resistor between the switch and coil, if one is there then you need one that says use with an external resistor, if no resistor is found, then get one that says no external resistor needed.

I would hot wire coil to 12v battery and measure current. If it uses about 4 amps it has a built in resistor. If it uses about 8 amps, you need to add a ballast resistor to bring current down to 4 amps.

Excessive current shortens the life of points or it could burn up the coil.

On a 12 volt tractor YES you can use a full 12 volt rated coil (no ballast required). That is one that has a LV primary resistance of around 2.5 to 4 ohms maybe 3 average. It may be labeled "12 Volts" or "12 Volts NOT for use with ballast resistor"

A Massey 30 would have been a 6 volt tractor so has it been changed to a 12 volt generator or to an alternator? How change was done could determine what coil. I know I do not like resistors. If it has one get rid of it if at all possible.
