Hi, I need help on this. I have a Perkins 4 cyl diesel in my backhoe and also 195CFM GD compressor. The batteries go dead. I charge them, start the engine, shut off after a while.... then battery won't start it again.
What's up. Ed Will

Sounds like a charging problem.

Have you checked the voltage across the battery with it running up to operating RPM?

Should be in the 14-15 volt range.

If not, check the belt, be sure it is tight and not worn down into the bottom if the groove and slipping.

Check for battery voltage on the large battery stud on back of the alternator, not running.

If no voltage there, there is a broken connection between the alt and the battery. Could be a fuse link, corroded or broken wire, some have a heavy duty fuse.

If the connection is good, and no charge, take the alternator off and have it tested at the auto supply. Most can be substituted for automotive alternators, avoid the dealer if possible!

There are some other circuits to test, but need the name and style of the alternator, or a picture of the back.

This is the best $20.oo you can spend. The laymans tool for checking a charging system. This kind of tester has been around since dirt was invented and they work well. There are far more sophisticated tools and a lot more expensive but follow the video for a decent how to do. A really good tester can go for 50 and an analyzer can push almost 80. Tool truck stuff is even more expensive. I do have the expensive stuff but this HF unit is very hand and if you loose it or break it then no great loss.
