Kinze 400 grain cart verse used, but newer center auger c...

Wanting to buy a grain cart. The positive things about an older Kinze 400 would be: 1) up front unloading auger for a good view, 2) over built main frame, 3) about as cheap as they ever are going to get - this one is $3000, 4) gear cases and drive chains are durable. The one I am looking at has decent augers - not sharp. Good bottom under the horizontal auger except for a needed patch where is meets the other auger. Upright needs a small patch as well. The rear axle has been replaced as you can see both spindles have broke at one time denting the sides. Sides have been pounded out. Looks like a new factory axle was eventually installed. The negative things would be more augers and more bearings. The used but newer side unload augers aren't built as heavy, but do have fewer augers and bearings to maintain/repair. I have seen several with patches on the main frame where it just didn't hold up. Seems like the little gear box that drives the unload auger can cause problems as many I have looked at have been replaced/repair. Thanks for any ideas.

Its pretty hard to beat a Brent. We abused three Brents on the wheat harvest through millions of bushels of wheat, corn and beans and grain cart drivers who pulled a loaded cart as fast as the tractor could pull it. No axles broke, no gear boxes went out. We did replace some auger flighting. Wheat is very abrasive. Two of the Brents had scales but the scale pads couldnt take the abuse. Oh, and one tractor drawbar broke.

I forgot to mention, a Brent is taller than a Kinze so if your combine auger is lower and you dump on the go a Kinze will fit your needs better.

The Kinze is the cadillac of grain carts. When on wheat harvest we had 3 Kinzes an 840 and 2, 1240's All held up well with much abuse on the 840. The 840 was hooked to a 4955 for 3-4 years with nothing but the flighting being welded up from wear and a bearing on the vertical auger I think it was. No broken spindles. The Big carts were on a Stieger tiger and an 876 versatile. The versatile did poorly on the cart. Had to go down hill straight or the cart would jack knife it against the tire.
Frame on the carts never was a problem even while using on irrigated ground with pivots. Bouncing through circle tracks.
