IH 454 Oil Pump

Hi,

I have an IH 454 3cyl diesel and I'm looking for information on the oil pump. Currently the oil pressure is good until it gets warm and then the oil pressure drops. A friend of mine said he heard of a guy who changed the oil pump to something else that kept the pressure where it should be. Apparently this guy dealt with an old tractor repair shop and they knew about the problem and said it's a common thing with the 454s. Unfortunately, the tractor repair shop closed down a few years ago and all I've got to go on is an anecdotal story with a lot of "I knew of a guy who knew a guy...".

Have anyone else heard of this? Replacing the oil pump? Or is it a sensor issue? I've done some digging and it does seem like a common problem (low oil pressure when warmed up and running) but I haven't seen anything about changing the oil pump to something else. Any thoughts are appreciated, thanks.

Just pull the oil pump out and see if it is worn. There is no magic "fix" needed if the oil pump is just worn out. You replace it with a new one and your good to go again. Low oil pressure when warm can be the oil pump but it usually internal engine wear.

Hi, first check that the injection pump front drive shaft seal is not leaking Diesel fuel into the crankcase oil and diluting it. Check by pulling crankcase dip stick and see if the oil level is over full and
smell the oil on the dipstick and if it smells like Diesel fuel then very likely oil is diluted with Diesel.

Where the cam bearings changed when engine was overhauled?

Does it have an oil pressure gauge or an oil pressure light?
If it has a gauge it is normal the oil pressure gauge needle to drop back to just over the top of the "O" in OIL on the gauge when engine is hot.

I would hook up a good known manual gauge before I did any thing else. I think your tractor has a manual gauge on it, and not a light or electric gauge(which use sender units). Use a manual gauge that has actual numbers on it, not just an H or L. Mark.
