2002 GMC transfer case

The tail housing between transmission and transfer case broke. I suspect the front U joint on the rear shaft gave way first. I wasn't driving, but it happened at hyway speed.

It's usually the rear case half that gets the rub hole from the pump to kill those t-cases. I have replaced a lot of the rear halves, most people neglect the leak and destroy the case though. Anyway, I haven't seen one break there yet, don't really see a u joint doing that to the front of the case. If it wasn't an IFS front end I would suspect a front slip yoke seized. It doesn't look like the mounting bolts were loose. Is the mount just in front of the break ok and tight?

We went to aluminum from cast iron, now we see
this. Make em lighter, make em cheeper, save the
earth.
My rant is over.look how thin the case wall is

I have seen one cracked adapter, but that
truck was driven with a bent rear
driveshaft. Allison equipped 4x4s can crack the rear transmission housing due to a seized rear Ujoint.

Yes, a U-joint can cause this but generally it has to be out a long time and vibration fatigues the week areas. I did see something similar happen on what I believe was an 82 model Chevy 3/4 ton with a 4 speed I think it was one of the first years using the 205 aluminum case. This was at the place I worked as a mechanic right out of high school. One of our main clients was maintaining vehicles for the railroad. This truck belonged to the railroad communications and radio dept. They had a mico brake lock installed to hold the truck while they would spool off wire from a trailer hooked to it. I don?t remember if the mico lock got set by accident or on purpose but a rookie got in to move it. Well this guy was smart on electronics but not mechanical things. He tried to move the truck...well let?s just say the rpms must have reached the trees when he dumped the clutch when it didn?t move at first. It came in our shop on a wrecker u joints broke in both the front and rear drive shafts and I believe both halves of the transfer case busted. Got that all fixed up and sure enough in a couple weeks it was back in for a noise that had developed in the rear axle. Popped the cover and sure enough the incident had also fractured a tooth on the ring gear.

Does that have the double ujoint type on front?

Had a F350 that the alignment ball broke off. Instant horrifying vibration!!!

Had it happened at high speed, no doubt it could do that or worse!
