Farmall Super C - Plowing Sod Questions

Is the Farmall Super C capable of plowing undisturbed sod from grazing pasture that is over 30 years old?

Set-up and plow recommendations if possible? Disc and cultipacker width recommendations.

If a Super C can do the job, what do I need to reasonably turn an old pasture into something I can plant?

Thanks!
Bill

It will do it easily. Any one bottom plow will work and 2 12 plows will work. They must have sharp (new) shares and or points and shares (depends on plow type/brand) Best with a colter. Adjust wheel position so the plow first bottom cuts its width from the furrow. The first pass may be kinda bogus unless you find a local to help set it up for the first furrow, then readjust for the remaining (wheel in the furrow causes this issue as it is lower than when both rears are on flat ground. Years ago I watched my neighbor plow alfalfa sod with a C (might have been a Super C but I was too young to know) with a 2 bottom trailer plow, probably 2X12, but again, I was a kid.

He was not having much trouble.

Hire a neighbor to do it. He'll have the right equipment to do in an hour or two what will takes you days to screw up/ LOL

It should pull a 2x12 through it. Unless your in a contest it doesnt have to be perfect. You didnt say what you wanted to plant but a guess would be after plowing use a disc(5 - 6 ft wide) and a drag to smooth it out really nice.

I remember watching my dad plow an old alfalfa field with our 6-18 (720?) high clearence plow and a 1466. It did wheel stands from one end of the field to the other - with a full set of suitcase weights on the front and fluid in the front and rear tires (no fluid in the single dual). It impressed the **** out of this man as an 8 year old.

Should work good, I plowed several acres that were sod for at least the last 50 years with good results using a Super A with 2-12 plow . No problems using second gear in NE Ohio. HEH

Thanks for the replies. I have tractors and plows to do any tillage I need, but still have an itch for a Farmall Super C and/or an Allis Chalmers WD to use around the farm.

we bought our place 14 years ago and I borrowed a buddies Super C to work up the open acre in the back. It had not been worked up for many years. Used the 2 bottom fast hitch plow and the fast hitch disc that he had for it. Worked up fairly decent for spring plowing. broadcast oats and drug a piece of chain link fence with my mower to set them in the dirt. Had a nice crop.
