Well that spoiled my day

Putting out the last load of manure before night chores, and everything went sideways all of a sudden.. Wham !! Wham !! Wham!! The pto shaft has separated, and the half still attached to the tractor is beating its self against the draw bar! What the heck??!!

The pin that holds the draw bar onto the underside of the tractor has dropped out, letting the draw bar slid back enough for the pto shaft to separate. But with all the weight now on the rear on the manure spreader, there is still enough friction binding on the draw bar against the yoke, to continue pulling the spreadet th

Naturally the pin that has gone missing creating all of this trouble is now somewhere underneath the sh!t behind the spreader. A quick search only made my feet dirty. This whole farming thing is never as easy to actually do as it appears to be going by on the road.

At least nothing else broke and you only need a pin. I was chopping alfalfa last week and the pto shaft came off the chopper. One loud thunk and something inside the 2390 broke. Steve

Went to exchange front ends around on the two 656's and the one with the wide front had one bolt gone and the others lose.

Geez, that's tough. At least the flailing shaft did not break the pto shaft off of the tractor. Would that have happened if you stayed home yesterday instead of going to the theatre and working on a Sunday...?

Hope you get it going without too much trouble.

Ben

Well, at least you didn't break the PTO shaft in the tractor off. Hopefully it isn't bent either. That's what you get for taking moma to a Sunday show and deserting your tractor. You forgot the saying--"Happy tractor, happy farming". (wink)-----Loren

Sorry to hear about your rotten luck today. Hopefully it won't take much to get back going. Happy fun day Sunday. Just a joke to help lighten the day.

Well Bruce those Hagadorn spreaders are HEAVY even when empty. The negative tongue weight of rear discharge spreaders beat on the tractor draw bars a fair amount. Be glad it was in the field not the road. It does not look like anything was damaged. The last time I had something like that happen it snapped the tractor PTO shaft off even with the housing.

Well at least you do not have to fork the load off. I always hated that the most.

well at least it was not with one of the new KUBOTAS , maybe it won,t be too hard to get back going.

I don't remember what year it was, but it was the year Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. I remember that because I had just bought some wheat out of the field from a neighbor. I was pulling about 6 tons in his new Killbros gravity box to another neighbors scales with my 4020, when suddenly there was no load. I turned around to see the wagon slowing, and heading to the right, jumping across the shallow road ditch, and plowing into another neighbors corn field. The little clip which holds the pin had broken off, and the pin jumped out. Went back up to the neighbors shop[the one whose corn field it was] got help and a chain, pulled wagon out backwards[tongue had jabbed into the ground] Went on my way with no loss! Now about Saddam Hussein. Remember what happened to wheat prices when that happened? I had already spoken for and priced this wheat! I scrambled to try to not lose on that deal. But, I could have lost big time, like a whole load of wheat, not to mention the new wagon, or any other property damage.

Maybe I should clarify. The pin/clip was the one holding the drawbar to the tractor. Same thing which happened to you. Why do they make that one so tiny, compared to what you might pull the implement with?

Many years ago,had a pull type bush hog on behind my 5000.

Went across a ditch, PTO shaft pulled apart, hit the drawbar and broke the PTO on the 5000.

Not one of my better days.

And yes, wound up buying a longer PTO shaft for the bush hog, wasn't gonna do that to me again.

I'll second your verdict of those being heavy manure spreaders. We have an H&S 550 that's basically identical to the Hagedorn and even empty it's a pull. Anymore it only goes on the NH 8970 to keep enough weight up front and to make it through soft and wet spots.

Good spreaders though. Let's not talk about pitch forking or scooping.

I?ve got a couple repairs I?m dealing with: when my trailer axle bearing burned up last spring, the axle walked out and the housing hit the pavement under 60 bales of hay. Unbeknownst to me, the axle housing cracked. It cracked more completely last week. Second photo is my new Hypro pump. Works great. But now the 3x higher pressure is blowing every weak hose and fitting out.

Neighbor had the draw bar on his tractor break while baling what a mess,I helped him put everything back together. After that I put a safety chain on all my balers. One thing I've done too
is to make up brackets so I can bolt the draw bar tight where it crosses the draw bar support so the draw bar can't move around.
