I am new to the tractor scene but very capable. I have replaced my starter, carb, plugs, points, cap and rotor. My issue now as I try to start the tractor my oil pressure line(the one going to the gauge) turns red hot. I was under the impression that you cannot get these tractors out of time but that kind of sounds like it is. I messed up and did not see the location of the rotor before I removed it.

Did you check to see if the battery cable
is touching that oil line and if the
cable is bare so it's making contact and
shorting out. That's the onlt way that
oil line could get hot.

better check all the battery grounds too -- your ground might be the oil line itself if that is the only thing grounding the
engine -- maybe should run the ground directly to the starter bolt -- good luck! --Roy

This all makes much more sense. I did put a new battery in it and the ground is very close. I will give that a look. Thanks guys

Make the ground connection directly to the engine or starter bolt.

The oil line has become the ground path, can't handle the starter amps.

I would replace the oil line. Getting that hot could have distressed the metal, could cause it to break, and it is also now filled with charred oil. You don't want that getting in the gauge or working back into the oil galleys.

Steve,
Actually, getting the tube that hot would have annealed the copper. So any brittleness or work hardened areas would be heated out of it. It's better now than it was before.
Won't crack.
