Ring gear broke

Have a toro zero turn mower with a Kohler engine. Went to start it the other day and there was a bang then grinding noise. The ring gear has snapped and is now slipping around the flywheel. Seems odd for one of these to break. I am thinking the constant heating and cooling caused metal fatigue. Not sure if these parts are readily available. I need the pull the flywheel off next. The machine repairs are now coming faster than I can get them fixed.

So, I looked up available parts. Looks like only thing available is the entire flywheel assembly for $160 range + shipping. I am thinking I weld this together and see if that works . Any downside to this plan?
 

I have 16hp Briggs that did the same thing last week, good twin 16 with teeth gone..
 
I would guess it broke because it was a heavy press fit to start with, I would Search for a used one, there must be thousands scrapped. Ebay, or Jacks Small Engines.

Most flywheel ring gears are made from a "stick" of bar stock that's rolled into a ring, and the ends then are welded together.

If you look closely at 'most any of them, you can see the weld line.

MOST likely, that's where is snapped apart.
