2002 Dodge 1/2 ton starts briefly but won't run

My Dodge 1/2 ton with a 4.7 V8 starts just briefly for a second but will not continue to run. If you press on the foot feed while cranking it will not start at all. If you press on the foot feed while it momentarily starts it will not rev up. When it does start it runs only at idle for only a second or two. This is not a daily driver. Ran it around last fall. Started it a time or two this winter and spring. Engine has never given me any problems. 116,000 miles. Sounds like something with the fuel system to me. Gas gauge works, but made sure it had gas by adding 5 gallon. I do not know where to start. Thanks.

Sounds like a fuel pump. Have someone kick the gas tank while you crank the engine and see if it will start. If it does it may work for a short time if you keep rpms up.

You might get a fuel pressure gauge and check to see just what fuel pressure you are getting. Miserable job changing a fuel pump that is in the gas tank. I would want to be sure that was the problem before I did that.

As others say perhaps a fuel pump. Not a lot of fun. We did some suspension work on my 2000 Ram last winter. Decided to take the box off instead. The bolts were a little rusty but all came loose. Couple wires for the lights and a ground cable and the fuel filler tube. I don't think it took 30 minutes to take off. And it has 260,000+ miles on it and lived in salty Minnesota most of its life. Nice to have 4 guys there to help lift it.

Could be lack of fuel pressure.

Also seen the cat converter collapse and plug the exhaust. It would try to idle, but nothing above idle. Try removing one of the O2 sensors before the cat. It will set a code, but if it starts and somewhat revs, it has too much back pressure.

" I do not know where to start."

You can't go wrong by checking the fuel pressure and scanning it for trouble codes.

In tank fuel pump. 6 bolts hold down the box and easy to get at. Did my 02 and not bad job if you have something to lift the front of box

I can always hear the fuel pump run for a couple seconds when turning ignition switch on with a couple of Dodges I had and have. That is normal and it won't run again until engine starts, so if it starts I would say the pump is running as when mine didn't run, no start period. One of my cars I never hear the pump running but on a recently obtained car, the pump running when turning key on is very easy to hear so you can't always hear the pump on every vehicle from drivers seat.
I would put a fuel pressure gauge on it to test.

Check to see if the security light on the dash is on. If the system does not recognize the chip in the key, the vehicle will do exactly as you explained. Sometimes the anti theft system screws up.

The security system or sentry key immobilizer kills the engine after 2 seconds if a fault or theft is detected. If the security system is seeing a fault or theft you should also have a flashing security light on the instrument cluster. It may or may not be a problem with the key, but if you have a second key then try it.
