Berryville #2 Mack B-61

Nice original-looking truck, the B-series that I like. One of the smaller ones with the shorter hood. Air start which is kinda neat. Smooth running diesel--the Mack Thermodyne as they call it--heard it run. Twin stick Simplex tranny. Neat feature hanging where a mirror would normally be: Air pressure monitor. All mechanical. A kind of pendulum goes to horizontal position with air pressure, hangs down with low air pressure. Never seen that.

Seller wanted $7K. I think that is high. As a self-proclaimed rust appraiser (since I did so well with the 10-20 McCormick I was bidding on), I am going to say that $5K would be pushing it--but more realistic. Needed all new rubber but besides that the seller said he's been driving it all over. Nice truck with a smaller footprint for someone who needs a vintage Mack in their lives.

When I lived at my farm (east of Osoyoos), there was a logging family that had those trucks, HOWEVER, at that time (early 70's), they had converted all the drivetrains to current issue equipment. As far as I know, the units still exist. Nice, hard working folks.

Air start may be NEAT to you but in an old vehicle not a good thing, two things first you leak all the air, second it takes more to start and old motor. Can,t or at least hard to pull start with no brakes so overall the air starter set up devalues the truck, you are closer to right at the 5 figure and that would have to be on a good day.

There are 3 of those trucks sitting behind a trucking company not far from me. There is a red one, a blue one and a
white one. They have been there for while since the company moved them to that spot. They didn't look too bad
when they were closer to the road in time past. Gene Davis Tennille, Ga.

That all makes sense but the owner pointed to a very large tank and said it was ONLY for the air starter. I saw another tank that was for air brakes and maybe horn as well. At least that's how I understood the setup.

Bil had an old IH. 4000? with Detroit air starter. They ended up mounting a contractor gas powered air compressor ahead of 5th. wheel to charge up starter air tank when it wouldn't fire up first time.

RedMF40, I found this tank at work recently then while looking
through a Detroit 6-71 manual I found out about hydraulic
start. I posted on Dying Breed Diesel site about the hydraulic
start and they are still in use. Included a few pictures of local B
models.

Thanks, that's interesting. I like the green dump truck. Single axle? Parked forever?

Here?s another picture. It?s a single axle and is at the same
garage as the blue Mack. What I found interesting was in the
manual only the Hydro start and electric start are mentioned.
No air starter is mentioned.

Thanks, that's interesting. From the photo of the green truck, looks to be longer wheelbase than I'm used to seeing on single axle dumps built on the B-chassis. Maybe truck started out as something else? Neat truck, looks like someone there is into collecting them.

Red, I agree that it started out as something else, perhaps flat bed or van for general freight. If that dump body had side boards and a full load it would scale way over legal. Even by YTDOT, LOL.
