Hey YT DOT think this is legal?

Was sitting in the drive-thru behind this guy today. 5/4 probably 12ft long, not tied down, no flag and to top it off, he ran it through his rear sliding window into the cab. lol

I don't see anything "illegal" about it. Maybe not the safest way to do things though.

I laid some 10' long boards inside my little Ford Escape not long ago because I did not feel like driving my 1 ton diesel truck just for a
few boards. I left the hatch open and had the boards up on the dash against the windshield. I hit one little bump on the way home and my
windshield broke. So I learned something new. That windshield breaks much easier when pressure is applied from the inside due to the way
the curve is. So my trip for two boards cost me a $325 windshield. Next time I guess I will use my truck.

If the lumber is not sticking past the tailgate I don't see much wrong with it unless the boards are bumping the driver s shoulder inside the pickup. If that was me I would have something tied to the boards to lightly anchor them.

Most states, if not all require all loads to be secured. In my state the law also requires a red flag on the end of any load extending more than 48 inches passed the end of the vehicle.

I think this made national news woman in Dixon Il had a wading pool on top of her car she had her 2 daughters sitting in it to hold it down.
needless to say the cop that pulled her over was not to happy.

John,
I've read all your posts, with the different handles you've used, for many years. It's hard to believe you did something like that. Say it isn't so.

JTWAT, that is a YTDOT interpretation of real DOT regs.

Just for the record, I have never changed my username out of personal choice. Over the years here at YT, I have had a few times when I was not longer in, asked for a password, and it would not work. After getting no help here from tech, I just re-registered. Seemed the easiest route.

And yes, I have done some pretty stupid things. Like when a neighbor asked me to eliminate his clutch-pedal safety switch on his tractor? So I reluctantly did it and then when done? I showed him how dangerous it was by starting it while I stood on the ground and I ran myself over and broke my neck and shoulder. How is that for dumb?

I did feel like quite the idiot breaking the windshield in the Escape. Especially since my wife had warned me not to do it.

I have hauled stirator augers UNDER my pickup many times. The come in 24 and 30 foot lengths. Just slide them under the pickup and chain them to the bottom of the axles and in the middle.

LOL, I have done the same with lumber and pipe/tubing.
But slung from the bumpers, back when pickups actually had steel bumpers.
Just had to avoid roads going over R/R tracks or with bad dips in the road.
