Was laying under the JD 60 just a few minutes ago
seeing what all?s involved in removing the starter
when I noticed the ?boat? drain plug. Pulled it out
and can still see plug threads, looks like a 3/4? plug,
got several on my work truck, I?ll clean the threads
and take care of that in the days ahead, guess a
previous owner lost the steel plug, lol. Reviving this
old gal has been slow go....

Its a plain old pipe plug but the Deere plug has a hex head instead of the square head on a regular pipe plug.

I do not want you to be surprised about the weight of that starter !! Laying on your back with that big greasy starter over your head is challenging. Don

I know the starter will be heavy, I posted a question on the Deere forum about the battery cable that?s connected to starter, any experience with removal of the cable so that I can ease the starter down? I can?t see where cable is connected to take it loose before removing starter..

I remove the fly wheel cover to gain access to the cable,,and of course remove the battery cable first,,also leave the easiest bolt to remove for last,, and a jack stand set in place will help keep from damaging your Dentures... the plug opening that your seeing is 3/4" pipe thread so chase it clean first.

I?ve already removed the flywheel cover but can?t see where cable connects to starter in the tight quarters

I think you can turn the fly wheel a bit to see it through the openings on the flywheel...be careful turning the bolt loose it is mounted on a copper strap,,it can knot up on you..

The I&T shop manual does not mention or have any illustrations of removing the starter on this tractor

Loosen the bat cable from the bat., then let the cable follow the starter down through where it goes to be removed. As others have said it is heavy - done it a couple of times - not THAT heavy. The cable will slow it down some. Put a jack stand under ( the starter) and remove the bat. cable. Tim S has probly done it a gillion times, just my way. HTH

The original plug was same size as the small end of the flywheel wrench.

Watch your fingers and keep firm grip on that starter, they get heavy while your unscrewing the small wirevand battery cable
