Farmall M is home!

Just drove the old M home from the auction site 30 miles. Went better than expected. Has sickle mower attatched to back and i took off bar so it didnt bounce all around. Made a stop on thus hot day at a gas station and filled up and got a cold drink and sat in the shade for 20 min. Saw some farms id never seen before. Pretty good day.
 
Is that the original seat? Sure is comfortable. I even had it in 5th gear whole way which is a first for me on a tractor. Usually drive my big tractor in third on the roads but not for 30 miles.

I had a M for several years, tough old tractor, and
went like stink down the road in 5th. The steering
was sloppy in mine, and on the road it was an
adventure. My Dad had a IH semi mount mower, it
cut a lot of hay.
 
It must be a good tractor then!

If it didn't overheat, leak, make strange noises, or break down, you're off to a great long lasting relationship!
 
Yup, I posted a couple, but too bad they are upside down AGAIN! Pitures I have on my phone just taken normal upright, always end up upside down on this site. So, in the back seat of the bumpy car, I thought I figured it out: I thought if I rotate them to upside down on my phone, then they would be right side up on this site!!!!!!! Nope. You can at least get a sideways backwards idea of the tractor though.
 
25v ihc mower,that seat is the standard seat,they
have a better 1 than it but if it rides ok id
stay with it.
If fenders are a tad snug getting on id get a
couple pieces of 1/2"x 6"x 10"or so steel plate,
drill holes same pattern as fenders ,bolt fenders
to extensions you made then bolt them to axle
housing.extra room is nice. Thats a straight m
too
 
That is a nice tractor! Everything looks dry and tight, I think you did good. Only thing is I would have been tempted to drop the sickle bar and mow the weeds along the way. Probably not a good idea in 5th. Glad things worked out and you made it home safe n sound. I am going to be on the lookout for more sales featuring dead and rusty machines in NW Wisconsin....I'll be sure to let you know :D
 
Oh , you did, too? Yes, that was kind of fun. What year did you drive your M home? I only had a mile of the trip that I had to go on the highway. The rest was backroads, partly gravel. I sure appreciated the gas station was there and had ice cold drinks! I got this new (to me anyway) sportdrink and it was the best I'd ever had. I threw the bottle away there so don't remember what it was called. Named something close to UnderArmor, but a little different. More of a natural drink with coconut water in it to rehydrate and re-electrolyte you. Very good. Orange mango. And I don't even like mangoes.
 
It was around 10 years ago. My trip was all paved 2 lane state
highways. That?s why I did it early on a Sunday morning no traffic. I
remember it was foggy coming out of the bottoms so I tied a flashlight
to the back! Don?t know if it did any good as there were no vehicles
on the road until the last 5 miles and by then the fog had burned off.
I figured if it couldn?t make the trip I wasn?t worth having!
 
Sharp looking M.

I drove my 400 home from the auction back in 2012 or so.
Didn't expect to buy a tractor that day but found a rusty but
great running 400. I made it about 2/3 of a fifteen mile trip
and it died cause the generator was not working and it was
running on battery. Spent the last five miles behind a pickup
towing that tractor white knuckled. Grandpa must have really
wanted to get home.
 
Went like stink?! Haha! :D I guess that means "not good", judging by your next sentence or two. I think that is the same set up I have, The M with a semi IH sickle. I don't even know the sickle model# yet. Tomorrow I can really dig into the tractor and sickle and see what I have and order manuals. The owner of this tractor was at the sale and told me all about how he re-did everything on it and he was extremely disappointed that it went for $950. He said if he was younger and able, he'd have butted in on the low bidding for this tractor and made everyone leave the property. Eek. I told him I'd take good care of it.
 
This has to be the M from my neighbor's
sale yesterday. Sounds just like him.
He's a good guy, but has unrealistic
ideas about what his old iron is worth.
 
yes, I was so so so happy everything ran and worked as it should. That's right, off to a great start.
marloweg, I did feel like I needed a seatbelt. When I got on and put it in first and let out the clutch this morning, I nearly fell backwards off the seat. I was expecting it drive like my other tractor. The only tractor I know. No, it really takes off fast when the clutch is let out. I discovered you have to very gradually let off it. But then I thought that the mile I had to do on the highway, it might be better to be able to be flug far away from the tractor incase ayone hit me at 55mph from behind! Very comfortable seat though. Very. That is actually what made me seriously consider buying the tractor attched to the sickle I wanted, was that nice seat. I fit right in there.
 
There are holes ready to use to move out the fenders. That'll be easy. What do you mean it's a "straight tractor"???
 
I left the mowing bar in the back of my truck! I didn't want the heavy, big thing on there for 30 miles. But, no, I would not have mowed if I'd had it. 100% concentrated on making it home alive. Both of us, me and the tractor M. Another out of state bid in north WI? No. No. No, don't do it. What will I come home with next??? :D

Thank, I think it looks pretty good, too. That must've been so scary getting that the last 5 miles. I couldn't have done that.
Ford Farmer, yes, and I casually asked a few people there if they helped put things around the day before, because you said you did, and I thought it would be fun to meet a YTer, and I didn't want to come right out and say "Are you fordfarmer" and they be like "A what-who?" and so I didn't know which one you were. And I see another guy this morning said he was there. You never know who is who.
 
I drove an M 18 miles after I'd bought it several years ago.

I checked the fluids, dumped a 5 gallon can of gas in it and hit the road. Was pleased to find he rear end was quiet, and the oil pressure and engine temp stayed where they were supposed to. It's been a good old workhorse.

I also once drove an 856 Farmall 52 miles after I'd bought it.

And drove a John Deere 105 combine 55 miles. That took a bit of planning. I drove that route with a pickup ahead of time to make sure there weren't any bridges I couldn't cross, etc.

been fun to meet another YTer.
30 miles... Which direction? If you went
east from the sale, then north, you went
past my place.

when we chopped feed everyday for the dairy. Was about 5 miles on dirt roads in MI didn't meet to many
cars LOL
 
Yes that's one IH type set assembly for the tractor. Lots of people knock that type, but in good shape and the spring adjusted for the operators weight I kind of liked them.

I'd like to try a sickle bar once, don't think I've ever operated anything with one, leastaways that I remember. Always pull-behind rotary mowers or brush hogs. Only sickle mower I have is an ancient CASE that is dead and permanently retired. I will hold off on looking for anything in your neck of the woods for now, but I'm thinking of Chuck the cat--he'll be happy with the M you brought home, but after a time he'll be wondering why you don't have a loader tractor. I know on hot days I find the cats in the loader bucket where it's shady and the cool steel is comfortable to lie on. You should be thinking about the cat.
 
goose that is too many miles on too many big farm things. I get really nervous on roads, even though I had a pretty good time today. Glad yours all made it! You're brave.

Thanks, yes tires look pretty good tread wise. There are cracks between treads, don't know if that should be a concern? Not bad to drive on your roads if there aren't many cars.
d slater, oh the seat can be adjusted for weight? Oh good I play around with that. Seemed nice how it was but maybe could be even better.
Gerrit, yes I think Chuck wants a loader bucket. Yup, he said yes. We just adopted a stray. There was the first stray that would come around every evening and stay all night, but he left. I hope he is ok. Really pretty cat, that one was. Very very skittish though. The one we adopted was the second one to come around and he wouldn't leave so I guess he is ours. Black and white and very skinny and is going to the vet to get fixed. Chuck doesn't like him.

I think I do remember that sign. And the hill. That was the first hill on the M. Quite the lightening storm we're having now.

That's great the kitty has found a good home with you, it's good of you to take him in. Chuck will warm up to the new cat once he fills out and starts looking like a normal cat. He's judging him on the cat he is now--not on the cat he can be!
 
Yep, that is a nice looking M. Have you figured out what year it is by the serial number? Any other
options like power steering, live hyd, etc? I envy your rear tires. My '51 M has one good Firestone 23
degree tire and the other rear tire is a 60 to 62 year old Gillette brand tire, never seen another tire
of that brand, had to be cheap for Dad to by them, the rubber has cracked most of the way around the
tire zig-zagging between the inside ends of the lugs, deep cracks too, through 2-3 of the 6 plus, and now
the inner tube has got pinched and goes flat in a week or two. The factory original tires on that M were
Generals with the check mark shaped lugs. They got put on the M&W direct axle duals Dad bought about
1960.
Spent many afternoons mowing hay with a worn out Oliver sickle mower behind a '39 Farmall H, used the
'54 Super M-TA one day, the H wore my left leg out clutching when the sickle plugged, SM-TA the live PTO
was too hard to disengage with my tiny 10 year old hands. The '54 Super H with live hydraulic worked
great mowing hay, 20 acres too 4 hours to mow. The 6-1/2 mph 4th gear sure beat the 5 mph 4th in the H.

Both the Super H and '51 M are retired now, they do a little loader work as required.
 
DR. EVIL, I've been gone all day, so stand by until tomorrow or later tonight when I have a chance to go look it all over, and I will report what I find out. Had anther exciting day today.
