What have I done? I'll tell you what--I left a bid on a rusty old tractor going up for sale out in Wisconsin tomorrow. This tractor is just a tad over 1000 miles away. This is really becoming a sickness with me.

If I end up the winning bidder, this means:

2,000 mile road trip, or arrange to have it shipped. Probably same money either way. Just less outlay of time.

The government website that calculates fuel cost came up with a one-way total of $203. I could live with that, but it's wrong. The reason it's wrong is they did not have an option for my truck, which has the V-10 gas motor in it. They offered every option BUT mine on their website. Maybe figured no one would take a trip in a truck like that. AND....I have not calculated my own fuel mileage because I don't use the truck that much--and I'm afraid of knowing what it is. It's not 14 MPG like the website says. More like 11.

This is like waiting to see if I've won the lottery, and hoping I didn't. I've been to Wisconsin, I like Wisconsin,, but it's not like I don't have enough to do right here at home. Rusty tractor in Wisconsin. The auction guy said he'd let me know tomorrow.

If you want to, you should still be able to retract your bid before the auction ends.

Red ..... why not tell us the rest of the story, ie. Something about the tractor you are going after (year,
make, model, condition, etc) and how much you bid on it. Unless it's a secret for whatever reason (like
your wife browsing the YT site). Once the crowd here knows that, you'll get some better advice. I'll tell
you one thing, anyone that would consider that kind of a shipping situation should seriously consider
getting some counselling for tractor addition ..... in my opinion anyways ...... there are many memblers
here on YT that suffer from the same ailment ... ha !!!

Or you could subtract your fuel and time costs from your winning bid and sell it to me for that
price.

i live in central WI. . if half way close could help you out with storing it till you could come and get it have 12 ton trailer .any idea what part of WI. just offering

Crazy Horse---this is a rusty yard ornament, possibly a McCormick Deering according to another member. It's one of the tractors under the post "neighbor's sale," I think. Not concerned about the offering price or the wife--we're no longer together for non tractor-related reasons. She was actually very supportive of this kind of thing, we took some good trips together, came back with all kinds of stuff. She was an academic, so rusty tractors and pickups were something different. I consider this kind of thing more of an experience than an actual purchase. Yes, if I am the high bidder, I'll buy the tractor, but I'm actually getting something more intangible--the trek across this beautiful country and meeting the people who make it all work. It's just that it's an awfully long distance and even though I've done it before--you forget how long it takes to grind away the miles, stop and look around, etc.

Marlow, thanks--I'm glad to know I might have some support if I need it. Area is near a place called Ladysmith--looks to be in northwest area of your state. I asked my phone and it said it's about 129 miles from Minneapolis. I talked to the seller and he said I have a lot of time to move it if I end up buying. He can keep it there for at least a month or more. Thanks again for the offer--you anywhere near Ladysmith? Sounds like you may be a bit further south.

Why would some one need counseling for buying tractors over 1000 miles away We bought 4 and a lot bigger 2 Stiegers an 856 and a 2940 deere. Little tractors in TX the Stiegers one in KS the other in ID Hauled them all to MI.

Gerrit!!! Hahaha! Yes, that is crazy. I believe you are going to be the high bidder. I suppose I'll go to the auction. I wish I knew when the big items were going to be auctioned. The last one I went to, I had to wait around all day for the small stuff to go before they got to the big equipment. So, did the guys you spoke to yesterday tell you the make and model of the tractor? They are pretty nice looking. I can also try to talk to your bidder and make sure he has the correct one. Image 54 of 158. Image 48 has rubber on the front tires. Actually, there seems to be a few of these same models but each is a bit different. Are you for sure wanting 54? Your priority is 4 steel wheels? Did you pack your bags last night?!

Yes, image 54 all steel! The sale is close to you??? That's great! I remembered you were in Wisconsin but it's a big state...what are the chances!

Someone here said it's possibly a McCormick-Deering but it'll be a display piece, just yard art to go with Case sickle mower.

If anyone needs to get in touch my # is
For for 3 ate for 5 three sicks 7 too. Thanks for your help!

Yes, it's close enough and I think I'll go to the JD tractor store nearby to see if they might have a chain for my old 14T baler. Are you wearing a line in the floor, pacing here and there, bubbling with anticipation? :D I'll bring my phone to post here if I need to ask you anything about the tractor. Maybe post a couple new pics of it so you can get a better look. IF I can use the phone there.

Its definetly Lot 2, says on its orange sticker. In deep wheel holes in ground. Looks like its guts are still there. Seat works so you can comfortably sit on it. I dont know who to talk to about making sure your bid goes to the right one. There are several.

Thanks, looks like it might need some paint, but good to know it has a seat in case I want to sit for awhile. I'll follow through if I'm the winning bidder, make it happen one way or another. I appreciate the pics--just remains to see if they can match me up with the right tractor. These sales get pretty hectic, they just want to see the items sold as quickly as possible. No great loss if it goes to someone else.

(quoted from post at 10:08:54 07/13/19) There is another one that says lot 2! Confusing. Ill try to catch an auctioneer between lots.

Thanks again for your help...BUT, don't let this little adventure interfere with your auction activities--or any other activities for that matter! Would be fun if I ended up with a tractor waiting for me in Wisconsin, though. I've talked to the seller and he said I can pick it up whenever if I end up buying. Month or more is ok.

Did you hear the news yet? I talked with the auctioneers and told them I want to show them the tractor you want. We were no where near those tractors yet, so I would show them as we got closer. Well, I ended up buying something and got tied up there, and there was another one of those tractors that looks like your one, behind this barn that I didn't know about. I guess the auctioneers thought that was the one and they bid for you, but it sold for over $300. So when they got close to the actual one you wanted, and all of the other that look just like it, I went over and said I'd like to show them which one you want (there was only one with all 4 metal wheels). He says they already bid for you on that other one! WHAT? I ran and looked at it and it had two rubber wheels. Ran back and said that was the wrong one. Lucky they didn't win that one for you! So I bid for you on the all metal wheel one, and we went back and forth bidding, and the guy brought the bid up to your limit, and so I didn't go higher. So you don't own a cute, rusty, old tractor in Wisconsin. Don't worry. There are more. There is a part two to this story that I will post in a new topic. Never got to the JD store down the road!

Wow, that is really something! You definitely went way beyond with helping me--and I still am amazed that you were close to this sale! What a coincidence! I really thank you--can only say that if there's ever anything in Maryland you have your eye on.....

I would've enjoyed the sale, looks like it was a good time--and the rusty old iron would match my Case sickle mower--brothers in rust. I really wanted something that looked more antique--not like a modern tractor--and this one looked to be a complete machine, which was nice. Mr. Kesan told me the motor insides are all busted up--broken pistons and I don't know what-all. Didn't matter, I wasn't going to try to breathe new life into it (famous last words).
Thanks again--please post the JD store experience as soon as you can, looking forward to it. And, yes, I was checking email about every five minutes to see the status of the tractor--really had no idea what kind of price it would fetch out there--but I'm glad the auction people made an effort to give me the sale. To take my mind off all this I went to TSC to buy an exchange O2 bottle for my cutting torch. $29.99 seemed a little steep, but I needed to use it today, so at least that's done. And one last thanks for all your efforts--hope you got something for yourself or at least had a good time!

Gerrit

It was so hot, my phone konked out. So I couldn't write on here before I left to tell you that you don't own the tractor. I'm just going to post the part two of the story here.
Gerrit, it's all your fault. I wasn't going to go to this auction. I read about your crazy bid and how you were concerned about them bidding on the correct one, so figured I go and straighten things out. Well, $950 later, now I own a Farmall M with a nice ready-to-work 7' sickle on the back! ANd the worst part is now I have to drive it all the way home on the roads. I figure it'll take a whole day and I just hope there are no breakdowns. I just bought another tractor. All I really wanted was the nice sickle, but the nice tractor was attached and being sold with the sickle, so I had to buy both. I just bought another tractor. What have I done? I just bought another tractor! Geez.

I wonder if a UHaul car trailer would work to get it home? But those two front wheels close together... don't know if the ramp would be wide or if it would be solid all the way across. Yes, I'm going to look into renting a trailer.

Oh. Really sorry I made you buy another tractor, but on a more positive note, I think you'll really enjoy the M. On those days when your other Farmall is tired or doesn't feel like going to work, you'll be glad you have the M. For this area, it sounds like you got a good deal. Not sure about where you live. Since we're spreading around the blame, I feel it's everyone's fault at YT for my even having the idea to go out there and pick up more rust. Even the people who don't post anything--I blame them, too. I accept no responsibility for any of this. I was minding my own business when I bought my Massey with loader, then decided to join here. I'm thinking of canceling my subscription.

How far do you have to go? Since there will be a lot of activity at the farm with people moving things around, I'd buddy up to someone who looks like they're going home empty--or has room on their trailer. For some gas money they might help you out. Maybe just put a sign on the Farmall: "I need a ride home," ph number and see what happens. I'd definitely go there in person, though. You can probably have your tractor home tomorrow. I just moved a parts car with a U-haul car trailer--I don't think it will work but not absolutely sure. Ramps were set up for cars--and loading would be a problem, too--two ramps spread wide apart. Please post pics of the M, I want to see if it's one that I would have recommended. They are supposed to be really good tractors but I know nothing about them. It's red, right?

:D yes, much more of this and I'll think about cancelling my subscription, too! :D
I think the car hauler won't work, too. I think maybe I'll see about taking off the sickle bar and just driving slow. Suppose that wouldn't matter too much. I'd like to go get it tomorrow. I left after your tractor sold, so don't think I'll run into many or any people when I go pick up. Mostly worried about that rear rubber caster tire. If that will hold out.
People came up to me and told me that was a good deal, so that's good. I'll go tomorrow and take pics and post them here if/when I get it home! It'll be handy, for sure. I would think it would use less money to operate, being a smaller tractor? It is gas and my other is diesel. I'm happy with the cost of operating my diesel but would be excited to use this and have it be even cheaper. The narrow front makes me a little nervous, safety-wise. Yes, it's red. It's pretty cute. I did think that Farmall 300 was even nicer looking. Another very exciting deal!
