Sandblasting and what to cover up?

I have a Farmall C and I m in the process of tearing it down and degreasing it. I plan on sand blasting. What should I be sure to cover up? Should I even sandblast the engine bay? What primer should I use after wards? Thanks :D

Sand will find it's way into places that you don't want it no matter how well you seal it up...

Agreed 150% from experience. Nothing worse than getting it all painted and together and firing it up to hear sand grind. Then you tear it all back down, clean all the sand out, replace damaged items and repaint. Don't ask me how I know....

I only Sandblast things that come off the tractor and have 0 moving parts. Then beat to epoxy prime and paint.

I'd sandblast sparingly, and NOT near any engine or moving parts. Sand from sandblasting is bound and determined to get everywhere you don't want it. Even if you think you have everything sealed and covered, it still gets to where you don't want it to be.

I have used Soda to blast some stuff near the engine.
I don't know how safe it is to use it on the engine.

I would not sandblast a whole tractor.
Here's the procedure I use.
Pressure wash a couple of times.
Then I mix about 2 quarts of liquid
laundry detergent into my 2 gallon punp
type garden sprayer and keep spraying
the tractor to keep it wet. Then
pressure wash again.
Then I go over the tractor with a few
sizes of wire wheels on an angle grinder
and drill. I use pics and small hand
wire brushes to get into the tough
spots.
Then I do the laundry detergent and
pressure wash routine again.
Blow it all down with compressed air and
Let it dry overnight.
Then I buy a gallon of lacquer thinner
and wash it all down really good with
brushes. Use the pump sprayer with more
lacquer thinner to rinse it off. Blow
it off with air.
I rattle can prime immediately and let
it dry. Then finally, I paint the
tractor.

Only sandblast the parts you can remove so as not to get any sand into any moving parts. Or-
Only way I ever sandblasted a complete tractor was to blast it and prime it and then tear it 100% apart to clean all the sand out and rebuild it. I had one blasted with plastic media and I still would not trust it as it seems gritty too. A complete tear down was done afterward and you can really see how bad that stuff gets in everywhere.

I tape all openings with duck tape and never direct blasting close to them and I have did a bunch with no problems its the only way to get bare metal everyplace. Use a good primer as soon as you can after the sand blasting

Unless the inside of the engine is rusty, leave it alone. No real need to paint.

Sandblast only individual parts that can be 100% cleaned up before proceeding. As others have said, sand will get into every joint
and only cause grief down the road.

On a put-together tractor, you can never get all of the sand off of it.

Judging by the places I found sand on myself, it does not matter how well you cover up or tape up, the sand gets EVERYWHERE.

Blast at your own risk. You know what the potential downsides are.

Thank you all! I don t think I m going to sand blast the engine bay now thanks to all of you guys.

You might look into dry ice blasting. It
removes pretty much the same stuff the
sand will, but leaves no residue. Granted
you'll have to pay someone to do it for
you, but I imagine the cost would more
that offset any future problems that sand
blasting can cause.

Read Ultradog's reply, then read it again and again. And then do exactly as he does and keep your sand in the bags or in the
sandbox or garden. I repeat ..... Read Ultradog's reply again.

cheap Dollar general spray oven cleaner does a good job of degreasing spray it on pressure wash then spray again after that I usually let it sit overnight then pressure wash again. Anything you can take off sand blast only thing I have found that keeps sand out if hubs etc is gorilla duct tape it works really good
