To paint or not to paint

MM made the bigger tractors for Massey 95,97,super 95 and super 97 due to a factory fire that is the way I understood.

Like pretty much all of the old tractor guys I wouldn't paint it. What I would suggest however is some careful rust clean up, followed by judicious application of rust converter. Properly done, only people who are familiar with rust converter would know that it had been done, and it would be protected against further deterioration.

Looks good pretty straight tin and all pretty much one color . New paint would look really nice but it takes a tremendous amount of work to do it even half right . So I?d probably leave it

For around here that is about as nice an old tractor as you could find. I would leave it, maybe do something to preserve it as others suggested.

I agree with the 'leave it as is' gang. I recommend coating it with used oil at the end of the 'season'.

My Dad has a 1938 John Deere G, has original paint. I convinced him to leave the way it is. He made a sign for it that said "It might not be pretty but it's original" It took a lot of years to make it look like that.

A restoration is not complete without paint. If its not painted, then it just old, oxidized paint. Since "restore" means to bring back to original condition, and no tractor left the plant with oxidized paint, then paint it - it deserves it. When you find a tractor in the fence row, it's not "original" condition - it's in "as found" condition. Just my 2 cents.

Minneapolis made these tractors for massey. and yes these are the same tractor in the masssey color. only difference is massey had a different grill, and also had the 4x4 model also in the massey 97. massey 95 and super 95 and 97 is a Minnie tractor. even bought parts at the Minnie , cockshutt dealer for them.

When I go to a show there will be rows and rows of prettified As, Bs, Cs, Ds, Hs, Ms, Ns, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, etc, etc.
I admire and appreciate the work that went into them as I stroll by.
But the tractors I will stop and gander at for a while are the ones like yours. The workers and survivors, the ones with mud and manure on their tires, they have a few leaks or dents, maybe an old timey repair on them, some patina. Evidence of the hard fought battles they've been through.
Those are the ones I most enjoy seeing.

If you paint it, you'll stop using it since it's so purty. You'll cuss every time a bird craps on it. The oil seeps will show up staining your nice paint, etc.
I repainted several machines and they were so perfect I didn't use them and kept them covered up with sheets. After a while I sold them because it was too much work to keep them nice and I didn't want to put the first scratch on them.
All my toys now are in their work clothes and filthy, just right.

Dachshund ..... but just painting it doesn't make it restored, it's just a painted tractor. If the owner painted it, would you consider it restored?

OK, I see where you are coming from, your reply sounded to me like the tractor in the post was "restored" but it wouldn't be complete without paint. Your reply obviously relates to some other tractor(s) and not this Minnie.

I'm going out on a limb and against the majority LOL, that model would look very sharp with a re-paint. Would not bother me either way, but I also like just as much an unrestored (or un-repainted if there is such a word lol) original. So many different levels of wear, patina and or similar with the finish on one that has it's factory paint. Tells a story like nothing else can. I think if repainted, it needs to be mechanically sound, and all and any leaks repaired. Personally, repainting, for me would not make it a trailer queen, while it would be fun to have one tractor with a ground up restoration, with a nice paint job, that you did not need to use much or want to keep nice, I would not hesitate to use any other that was repainted, would just then clean after use, maintain etc., no different if it was like one you got new, nice to take care of them right from new, so many never did. New paint will command pride by an owner or an operator, though I have seen some that don't care, a well kept machine of any kind usually helps it stay that way if an owner or operator takes pride in what they have or will operate.

Either or, that is a nice one with FWA, looks the part, it is in nice shape and I'll bet very useful just as it is ?

I like it! Local rice farmer had 2 of those and the front wheel drive went out on both. It was the same part as I remember and he could not find a replacement. Don't know how hard he looked. They were parked and set for many yrs., then scraped out.
