The bearing on the output shaft has some play in it and is losing some grease. My Chilton manual has nothing on transmissions. Has anyone changed the bearing on one? Can it be done in the truck? 200,000 miles, so I guess I can't expect it to last forever.

I cannot seem to find the transfercase on my 1978 Toyota truck. I suspect I might have the only 78 in the country with a full-floating dually rear axle.

Thanks for the video but I have to change the bearing not just the seal, and mine is a four wheel drive.

That's a nice looking Toyota! A guy down the road had one like that. When I finally decided to see if he would sell it, I went over there but it was already gone. Doesn't the motor get hot with the tire on the front?

No heat problems at all. Granted I do most of my travel around northern Michigan - but I have driven quite a bit at 75 MPH when it was 95F outside. It did fine. The spare used to go in back underneath - but I used that space for a 2nd gas tank.

Used to be a lot of early 80's dually Toyotas around here. U-haul rented them as small box trucks around here.

Just a little warning, the bearings in my 89 5 speed 2X4 were only available from Toyota. I guess the "S" prefix ment special.

No such thing as a factory equipped FF dually Toyota until 1986. None in the early 80s or any of the 70s. 1986 was the year Toyota installed them in new trucks (duals and full-floating rears). Also, for a small cost - Toyota sold upgrade kits to motorhome owners back to 1979. Never a 1978 or older like mine. 78 and 79 are very different trucks. Uhaul did not use them until the late 80s and early 90s.

You can remove the extension housing, after removing the speedometer gear, and switch. yoke, then you remove the main speedo gear, steel ball and oil pump screw, you should be able to remove the output shaft bearing after that.
