As the song goes, California has experienced an earth quake around 11 this morning near Bakersfield. I will take our earth quakes rather than the twisters some of you experience. Stan

A few years ago a friend from Georgia wanted to come up and see the Knoxville Nationals in August. Well, the weather was not ideal with tornado warnings, sirens every night, heavy rain and hail. But on Saturday night he'd had enough when he said,"I'll take a hurricane any day!"

6.4 magnitude, they are reporting it the strongest in southern CA in decades.
Good thing it happen out in the boonies.

I live in Kansas, so I've seen a few twisters. But on June 28, 1992 I just happened to be in the Los Angeles area. What's so special about that date? That's when the Landers earthquake hit at about 5:00AM on a Sunday morning, with a magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter scale. At the time, my uncle was an active Lutheran minister in that area and I was sleeping on a pull-out sofa in his living room. He got up early that morning, obviously because he had to preach, and he walked past the sofa a few times, with me being half awake and knowing that he was up. Suddenly, I thought he was playing a joke on me as the whole sofa shook. I sat up wondering why he was doing that, but instead I saw him sitting in the living room just looking up at the ceiling. I then knew it was an earthquake and I decided that whatever he did, I was going to do. If he hit the floor, I would have. If he would have run outside, I would have done that also. He just calmly sat there and I remained in bed. It seemed like a long earthquake to me, but I had nothing to compare it to. I also remember that the water in the swimming pool was rocking back and forth and about 150 gallon (my estimate, I don't know) of water went over the side of his swimming pool and hit the side of the house. The epicenter of this earthquake was far enough in the desert that it didn't really do too much damage.
There were aftershocks later on when he was preaching in church. I remember the church lights were swinging and some lady screamed and dove underneath a church pew.
It was impressive enough for me.
