A friend of mine asked about an Oliver 88. He wants to know if there is anything in particular he should look for? I think he wants to put it in the stock tractor pulling events.

It seems those stock Oliver's do great in the tractor pulling contests around here.

Common items that predict lower purchase price:
Oval hole in the draw bar indicating many hours of tillage
Worn out waffle pattern on the clutch/brake pedals
Wobbly (side to side) pedals
State of air cleaner service
color of engine oil and presence of coolant
Color of trans oil and mix of H2O
does it charge
Is the electrical system look garbaged up and ready to short out
Rust in the gas tank
cracks in manifolds
Run it for an hour to check idle oil pressure warm
All gears work and do not pop out
Brakes are even and work respectfully
Condition of seat brackets and suspension
Tires for cracks and repairs calcium cloride damage
steering looseness before wheels move

Good luck, Olivers are quality tractors and are usually modest in cost. Jim

Another thing on Oliver's that have been used a lot: the gates can be really sloppy when you are shifting gears. The sloppier the gates, the more hours it has been used.

Don?t let transmission whine scare you away. Those older Oliver?s had significant gear noise, even when new. I?ve read that Oliver did take measures regarding transmission noise, they installed a louder muffler. Seriously.
