Wagon Restoration

I just got a wagon I want to restore functionally to pull the kids around the farm on. Make a hay ride wagon. I'm not sure the name or type it is.

Anyone know what this is and where I can go for parts or restoration tips?

Thanks!

Is that pedal the accelerator? Just kidding, what kind of brakes does it have? I have put hydraulic brakes on four horse drawn wagons. It was not hard to do once I got the first one done.

They appear to be mechanical breaks. I got it home last night so havent had a good look at everything.

I do know one of the rear wheels is locked up.

Watch some of these videos. What this guy doesn't know about wagons hasn't been
invented. He has 120 plus videos on wagons. Just fascinating to watch and
learn. Just plain and simple viewing and you just keep on learning how to.
Engle wagon.

I build parade wagons as a hobby and have used a variety of running gears but there is not enough detail in your photos to guess at the running gear identity. It looks like it does not have auto steering but maybe has a pivot point in the middle of the front axle on which the axle turns. The box looks like a home made box especially with the bus type bench seat. You will need the brakes if you pull it with horses but if you pull it with a tractor you will not need the brakes. I don't see a tongue in your photos but only a chain connecting the front wheels. Don't know how that will work. I'll be happy to share information with you on rebuilding your hay ride wagon.

Your wagons are beautiful! I am inspired.

The front wheels on my wagon are 6 lug and the rear are 4 so I'm thinking home made also. Or someone replace the hubs.

The brakes are hydrolic but broken. The hydrolic chamber is dry and one of the brakes is seized up. I am planning to pull it with my '49 Ford 8n so I don't need to worry about the brakes unless I just want everything working.

From the mounts on the sides I'm thinking they had a canopy on it at one time. That would be fun to put one on again. Not sure where I would get the hoops or what material I would use.

You are correct about the front axle. Single pivot point. There are some parts missing on the front but he did have a tongue laying in the floor of the wagon. I'm thinking if I put a bar across the front, I can mount the tongue on it and that would work great for what I need.

Any ideas, suggestions, opinions, or help you are willing to give would be appreciated. You obviously have the experience and know how I can learn from.

Sgtmac - My email is open if you have questions that I can help you with. I have drawings and photos that might be helpful depending on your needs. I believe you can get that wagon rolling with just a few hundred dollars invested if the spindles are good. It probably will need wheel bearings and tires to get started. Let me know how I can help you.

Where did you get your parts for the hydrolic brakes? If I want working brakes I'm going to need to replace the ones on there now.

Also, do you just use an automotive hub? One is seized up and will need to be replaced.

Sgtmac - On the lower right hand side of my response there is a notation that says (Send Email). You can just click on that and send me an email. Or you can bypass that and send it to me at [email protected].

The brakes are probably repurposed from some random junk car that the builder had available to him. You will have to figure out what they are in order to get parts, or get your own random junk car and start over.

It's rough when things aren't built to a standard.

I removed the rear tires to look at those brakes. The one is seized up pretty good. I think I may just remove the rear brakes on this. Just the front should be fine for my needs.
I also included some pics of the brake mechanism. Any ideas of what I have here?

Your wagon is apparently home built with local off the shelf materials, perhaps some of it scrap. This gives you license to change anything and everything, in order to make the job easier and to make the finished product more to your liking. You will need to do a lot of sandblasting, but you could also save a lot of time by simply replacing a lot of the steel with new. The two arms that stick out the front appear to be an afterthought. They appear to be there two hold the chains which appear to be to limit the amount that the axle will pivot. If I were you I would move them to under the wagon.

Got it! Not sure about these brakes or even if I will fix them, but now the wagon will roll. Well, it will once I get round tires.

I have a threaded bar I can fit between the two front bars perfectly. Then I can.attach the tongue and.i think I'm in business.
