Quick question, I am picking up a new finishing mower on Friday and it calls for an 80 to 90 EP gear lube. I was looking in the garage and I have a 2 gallon jug of Cenex MP SAE 85W-140. Can this be used instead of the 90 w gear lube?

Got some 00 grease for the gear box on my brush mower. Not going to use it in the winter

you mean its new and your buying it without gear box lube? never heard of that. how will warranty work? but yes the 140 is ok in summer. or you talking about changing oils?

Yes it can be used, and it will be just fine for that application, they are giving you an oil spec which is pretty much the minimum normal for gear oils, nothing wrong with doing a little better or thicker (when hot) than single grade SAE 80 or 90. I don't know why we would be concerned about winter temps with a finish mower haha.

While doing the research on finding the type of 3 point mowers I wanted to buy, almost all of them come without gear lube in the gear box.
