stiff and sore

Raked about 15 acres of hay yesterday. Finally got a first cutting done after all the rain. Northern Ky. is very hilly and I raked with the SMTA. Lots of uphill turns and no PS. My arms and shoulders are sure sore this morning from wrassling that tractor. I am looking for sympathy here. Ellis

There are also electric power steering units on some cars that can be used like a Char Lynn, but no need for a pump. Saturn Vue was the first, and now there are others.

Someone had a pretty 400 at the hungry Hollow tractor show. It had a plate bolted to the outside of the governor housing, that extended forward and a power steering pump was mounted to it. They had added a pulley to the crankshaft pulley for the belt.

TractorDoc from RedPower and Green wrote a series of 'how to' articles a few months ago.I ordered his info pac.

You'll get none from me.LOL I too use the old tractors. That's just the price we pay to enjoy them.And?.I wouldn't have it any other way. :)

How was the Hungry Hollow show I wanted to go but my son from Florida is home for a week and my Grandson had his graduation party yesterday this is the first year we have missed in about four years. Do you have any pics you could post. Randy

No sympathy. This old fa-t remembers 10-12 hr days on M with front mount cultivator, (about 12 or 13 years old), and power steering by armstrong. You soon learned what spinners knob and brakes were for.

Guess I've gotten lazy, sorry or both.

Put power steering on both Ford 4000's I inherited, Dad's 69 model and Grandpa's 64. I had gotten used to PS on the tractors I'd bought, had to have it.

That 4000 of Dads, he bought new, had a one arm loader on it with no PS when I was a kid. It was rough, but still beat a pitchfork. Put one of those Turkish built kits on it. Yeah, can't use a loader on it anymore, but I don't need it for that.

Grandpa's 4000 was just hard to steer, even after I lubed the snot out of everything. Guy had a used aftermarket PS kit in the classifieds to fit Grandpa's 4000, works great.

Neither one of those tractors gets used that much, they're here more for sentimental reasons, but I enjoy it when I do find a reason to get them out. Got the tedder on dad's 4000 now.

Well at the southern part of your state,I finished first cutting this week also. A little over 500 rolls. I have some second cutting cut down, the weather guesses say I better get it baled before Tuesday. Nathan

I can't muster much sympathy. Don't know how old I was but I do know I could only reach the clutch or the brake but not at the same time driving an M on the baler. Nobody heard of power steering, always had one of my brothers stacking the wagon and he'd have to run up to the tractor if I got in trouble. We had two of those Ms I ran until I was about nineteen. Now I have my own Super M and can hardly steer the dam thing or get on or off of it.

No sympothy here either. 2 row cultivator on 52 A jd no ps.4 row on 630 jd.the bigger tractor was needed on heavy job so front part of t4 4 row was put on A jd.i was 13 and yes a few times i fixed fence while cultivating

No sympathy from here. Was the first item for attention on my SMTA. Charlyn PS.. Found a pump from 50's Packard that worked just like the factory setup for $20. Tank from a Caddy. CharLyn brackets, cut shaft down. All under the hood.

I raked 20 acres of hay on Thurs with a David Brown 780 (no PS) and baled it with a Oliver 1550 (w/PS) then did about 15 acres on Friday with the same rigs not really sore after awhile you just toughen up.I'm only 67 so for some of you old guys it might be harder.

Well I will give you a little sympathy. We dont do the physical work today that we did years ago to keep the body in shape. Doesnt help any to get old. Back in the front mount cultivator days I would get sore shoulders from cultivating all day. I was young and in better shape then too.

Hello Ellis, I'm from the extreme western end of the state but was up in your area last week. Went to the Creation Museum and Ark.

Hey Ellis-I can relate. I'm just down in the next county, Bracken. I usually ted and rake with my 300u,manual steering. Several of the pieces I did this past week are hillsides, odd shaped and small. The finishing up is where it's the hardest-constant turning. One hill is so steep that with all the rain, the 485cih that I mow and bale with, could not pull the baler up it-kept spinning out. Had to take an alternate 'route' thru the woods trail. I honestly did not think it would come up out of there either, but it did. Aren't our hills fun?? Mark.

That sounds like the genuine factory Char-Lynn power steering pump mounting kit for IH gas tractors. Dad put PS on the '51 M in the late 1950's, everything on the pump & reservoir is under the hood. He traded an M for a slightly used SM-TA spring of 1960 and put Char-Lynn ps on it that spring, kit had the same pump bracket that 400 had so the change was in about '57 to '59 time period.

Been plenty of stiff and sore since May 28 when I got L4 and L5 vertibrae fused together. Back not hurting like it has been for a few years. Get to go back and see the doctor in a couple weeks. Maybe I can pickup more than 8 pounds.

Im sympathetic, hauled 189 rolls from field to barn last 2 days with an old one stack mack dump truck, no ps and double clutch shifting. Had a round of pneumonia again this spring. Docs took me off the mower and baler for the rest of this lifetime.
