Three holes in fuel tank

When is a tank too far gone? I?m gonna fix three
holes in my JD 60 fuel tank with one of them being
about 3/8? in size, got the tank soaking in vinegar at
the moment, gonna carry it to work with me next
week and put some acid in it that we use then wash
it out and try to tig weld the holes up, then I?ll
probably get some kind of tank sealer to put in it.
Was wondering if any of you had any interesting
stories on some severely rusted tanks that you
salvaged rather than tossed away.

I do no bike shops use some sort of stuff to seal there tanks. Abilene machine shop in Kansas makes fuel tanks. bought one for my 960 ford for 127 shipped. works fine. couldn't find anyone who would weld a gas tank. they would diesel but not gas. good luck but be careful.

I have repaired two tanks one off a 354 IH and another from a 545 ford backhoe, they were so bad that it looked like someone shot them with a shot gun on the bottom, they both were full of rust pin holes, some will laugh at what I did but it worked, cleaned inside with acid solution , then wire wheeled the whole bottom of tanks, bought 3 packs of JB weld and covered bottom of tanks with the JB they have no leaks and are holding as we speak

Take it to the radiator shop. I couldn?t find a new one. Mine was bad. $150 and it came back like new. They welded a lot of new metal into it.

I once fixed a pickup truck gas tank that way. JB weld and duct tape for "reenforcing mesh". A thin layer of JB, a strip of duck tape and so on. Worked for a couple years til the rest of the truck rusted to the point I scrapped it.

I acid clean a JD 40 gas tank till it was paper thin so don't get carried away with the acid. Acid is my preferred method to clean a tank. The JD 40 tank had a gummies old liner that I was trying to clean out.

I had one the entire bottom fell out. Cut it to clean edges and welded a piece of sheet metal back on. Then used Red Kote on it and it didn't leak a drop. Three holes is nothing. I have a jeep that has closer to a 100 small holes in it. That one I just fixed with Red Kote. It's probably been close to 10 years ago and still holding.

I've fixed a few gas tanks with ribbon epoxy (knead the yellow and blue together until it's green then push it into the hole like chewing gum), but I don't think I'd trust it for 3/8. Maybe, if I had no other choice.

Had a rusty mess on the whole bottom of a Oliver 1650 tank.i cut out the bottom and welded in a piece of heavier steel.as well as the original fittings I added a 2? drain so I can drain the gunk from time to time

Old tractor gas tanks are typically made out of "terne metal", steel coated with a specific mixture of lead and tin, both inside and outside, NOT something that welds well.

Solder, on the other hand, will stick easily if it's clean and fluxed.

If you can access some sheet copper, it makes a GREAT patch, send you can use StayBrite or a similar silver solder, which makes a TOUGH repair, yet flows easily.

My unstyled B had several holes. I sandblasted it to get it really clean ! I just went after them with acid core solder and a propane torch. You can fill in some really large holes with solder. A patch would likely of been quicker and easier ,but I never thought of that.

If you are left with small holes. Jeggs makes a great gas tank liner. It is easy to use and worked great on my Ford 861 diesel tractor. It a polymer that you pour in and move around. quote="grayrider"](reply to post at 16:12:45 06/26/19) [/quote]
