Steering and hydraulic failure IH 424

Thanks to all who responded here with helpful comments to my post of 6/19! I had a chance to go back to the tractor Saturday. It started right up and all hydraulics worked fine, so I began mowing again. In about 20 minutes I heard thunder and saw that the sky was darkening. I headed back to the barn. When I got to the top of the hill and turned around to back in, the hydraulics stopped working again. I had to leave it right outside the barn. I came back Sunday morning and tried it again. Started right up, no issues. I had to go to work soon, so I just backed it in the barn and disconnected the battery cable. Now I think I have some more clues. Both failures happened after 20 or 30 minutes of operation. I'm thinking it has something do with getting warmed up. Has anyone had an experience like this? What say ye? Thanks for your help.

Did the hydraulics quit in the fiels when going up or down a hill? If so they could be low on Hytran. Ofer filling by a gallon is OK. Jim

I had a 504 with a plug midway down the case on the left hand side. The plug was drilled and tapped for a small bolt, so I just assumed it was the fill level plug. Hydraulics were always intermittent. I finally went into it, and it turned out fluid needed to be a couple inches above the plug to be "right". Worked great after I started filling it a little higher.

We got some 303 oil free years ago and I decided to change the hydraulic fluid in our 424. After a half hour or so it wouldn't pick up the plow. Replaced it with Hytran and all was well. The hydraulic system on that tractor always ran hot.
