john deere 494a planter gear case

First question is dfoes it actually have a gear case. Early ones do, later ones it is an openset of sprockets. If it does have the gear case the gear case is the same as the 494, 694 and the 490 and 290 planters with plenty of them around. I don't have any having sent about 8 of those gear cases to scrap this year. I like the gear case better than the open sprocket setup but you get a different range of planting speeds. Gear case is simple to work on so what is actually wrong? It was 1 494A, 3 494, 2 490 and 4 290 planters I just had to send to scrap when I moved.

I some how broke the shaft off where the chain pulls to engage and disengage the drive. Yes i defiantly have a gear box and 3 gears next to it on side.

You might be able to get that shaft new yet from Deere and as long as the case is not busted I would try that if could not find a parts planter. I think that gear case was used from 1937 to 1967 on all pull type planters.
