John Deere 50

Started my 50 today took a little drive after about 5 minutes it started to back fire once then again about every 20 seconds but only when It was at high throttle ran perfect at low idle anyone have any suggestions on what to look for thanks Howard

Good running at idle but problems at higher RPM or load sounds like there could be a fuel or carb problem. I would check and clean, drain and flush the sediment bowl assembly and any associated screens and/or filters. The carb could have a float or needle n seat problem or be partly clogged up but start with insuring good gas flow to the carb first. With gas on and line removed from carb there needs to be a good full steady stream of gas getting to the carb. While it sounds like fuel or carb problem what shape are the plugs and points in ??? That tractor doesn't have the low oil pressure diaphram sediment bowl assembly does it??

Howard, Water in the gas can cause such problems. Id start with a good drain and clean and flush the sediment bowl until good clean clear gas (no water or crud) runs out of it to the carb. Water can collect in the bottom of sediment bowls and some have a fine mesh screen on top of them. It could still be a carb float or needle n seat or a jet problem but start with insuring good gas flow to the carb first. I have also seen gas tanks not getting vented to cause such problems.

Try pulling out the choke a little when its missing at high speed- if that solves the problem, you have low fuel supply to the carb and its probably crud in the sediment bulb fixture where it screws into the bottom of the tank. Pulling the choke reduces the air supply so it rebalances with the restricted fuel supply and makes it run smooth again.

Condenser. A condenser going bad will mimic a lean mixture. The muffler on my 630 is bulged out from a backfire caused by a bad condenser. Its always good to check out the fuel system as routine maintenance but try throwing a new condenser in it first. Get two condensers in case the first new one is bad off the shelf.

When all else fails , probably the throttle shaft is worn and leaking air. Two throat carbs have an issue with that. Causes lean mixture intermittently.

I have 440 crawler with 2 cylinder that will do that after sitting, and it sits a lot. Cap and points seem to be a moisture magnet even when dried out have to run something through the points and clean the cap.

2nd that. Had a model 60 act like a plugged carb. and it was a bad condenser. Pulling the choke would even help it run ,but carb. was not the issue.
